'Cheeky, yes. Rebellious, definitely. But quintessentially British?
Banksy's image of kissing policemen, originally daubed on a Brighton pub
wall, has been surprisingly named the single work of art that best
expresses British identity in a poll of 1,000 artists.
'The graffiti artist's depiction of a two policemen in a clinch tops a
list dominated by bold and predominantly modern works chosen by British
artists as representative of their national heritage...'
The Independent.
I don't know a lot about art, but I do know any great work of art would be much improved by leaning an old bike against it, and having it right next to a pub's stinky bins.
Brigh'on!

Depressing.
ReplyDeleteWhich bit?
DeleteBanksy's a knobend - a middle-class twat who's "appropriated" graffiti from the vulgar lower classes ("how can what they do be art, the uneducated oiks???") and sold the knowing irony of his shitty stencil work to the mongs who buy such shite as being controversial and new.
DeleteTwo policemen kissing, ooh!
BOLLOCKS, Fabgurn and DOUBLE BILGE!!!!!
^^^ Brian Sewell there...
ReplyDeleteOn the contrary: there's a wealth of great graffiti artists in London alone with more talent and imagination and originality than Banksy.
DeleteBut he's middle class, therefore safe - and his images are lapped up by a certain moromic set who probably blind to most other graffiti - in fact, probably think it's vandalism or just people with nothing better to do.
Banksy is depressing. :)
Not to mention the wankers who've elevated his thievery (his style is not new) and lack of talent.
Bloody moroms! :(
ReplyDeleteYou are mocking me, Figbum!!!!!
DeleteGood day to you, sir!!
