Noam Chomsky: On Gay Marriage

"[Obama] didn't want it, in fact he was against it at first. The way he put it is his views have evolved on the subject. And that's also true of the Republican right-wing, their views are evolving on the subject. And they're evolving for a very simple reason, if you take a look at public opinion it's way ahead of them on this issue, and they can't be that far behind public opinion. It's not a class issue, so the corporate elite couldn't care less - I mean, if the CEO's homosexual, who cares? So for them it's not an issue, so therefore it can easily go forward. It's important, I'm not denigrating it, but it doesn't illustrate any commitment to civil liberties."

Here's a brief video of Noam talking about gay marriage posted last week that I found when dicking about on the internet - not sure where it's from yet.

Edit: Here's the full interview with TJ Armand where Chomsky also talks about the legacy of Chavez, Cuba, human rights in Turkey and religious fundamentalism.

  1. It's true, isn't it? It's frustrating when people start falling over themselves to thank and praise people like Obama or Hillary Clinton or even David fucking Cameron, for "supporting" gay marriage.
They're all quite clearly just catching up with public opinion after they've made sure that it wouldn't cost them the ultimate price at elections.
That's scary, because people like that would do a complete u-turn if public opinion ever began to change again.
Their support has nothing to do with civil liberties.
