TV Review: Made In Chelsea

A tweet from Paris Brown - Kent's 17 year-old "Youth Crime Tsar".
It's not exactly Nancy Banks-Smith, is it?
One of several offensive tweets that the Mail On Sunday found and turned into a front page story.
Part of me feels a bit sorry for Paris being outed as an asshole in this way, it's hardly the worst thing going on in the world right now.
I'm also not sure her tweets that mention "fags" are homophobic, just dumb.
Maybe the only lesson to be learnt is not to make silly entitled middle-class children "Youth Crime Tsars"?
Or not to make anyone a "crime tsar" of anything - it's all just a pointless PR exercise by PC Plod.
And I'm not really sure what the MoS is complaining about.
As her tweets whine on about "fags", "illegals" and "pikeys", Miss Brown sounds like a typical Mail reader.

Update: Word is the Mail trawled right through her tweets and published ones she sent when she was 14.

Update2: Oh fuck, seems I'm thinking along the same sort of lines as Melanie Phillips on this; This yoof crime tsar is just a silly little girl. The true scandal's the fortune being wasted on non-jobs like hers.
Mea culpa!

Do you think any offensive word can be used to refer to gay people? Are there any words which should not be used in relation to a person's race?

  2. Fair point.

But from the tweets reprinted in the Mail, she seemed to be using "fag" as an all-purpose derogatory term, or in a "that's so gay!" way, as, sadly, so do many school children these days.

It's callous and unthinking and negative - and yes contributes to sustaining cultural homophobia - but I don't think it can be seen as an expression of hatred.

I have no idea what's going on in her mind, but it's not like she tweeted something like "I hate faggots" or "All queers must die".

  3. Why all the surprise? She's a product of Section 28, which ensured any kind of challenge to homophobic prejudice was a criminal offence. And deep Tory Kent County Council was one of the most vigilant of local authorities.

    1. Section 28 was repealed when she was about 7, but yes, its pernicious repercussions lingered long after, and KCC tried to bring in their own version...

  4. The fact that sex and relationship education is optional, and that faith schools and academies can teach sexuality 'according to their ethos' (viz. Carshalton School for girls) shows that the sentiment of Clause 28 is alive and kicking, well after its repeal.
