When campaigners opposed to new laws allowing gay marriage in France
wanted to
take out a full-page advertisement in Le Monde, executives at the French
establishment daily were happy to accept the much needed revenue. Now
they
are being denounced as idiots, not only by their owner but also by
France’s
First Lady.
Pierre Bergé, the gay-rights activist who is chairman of Le Monde’s
board of
directors, was so livid when he saw the advertisement that he fired off a
series of Twitter messages that had managers quaking in their shoes.
It got even worse for senior staff at the newspaper when Valérie
Trierweiler,
President Hollande’s partner, relayed Mr Bergé’s furious messages in
what
was taken as an expression of support for him from the Elysée Palace.
The row comes with Mr Hollande’s Bill authorising same-sex couples to
marry
and to adopt children being debated in the French Senate amid fierce
opposition from Roman Catholic and conservative groups.
Manif Pour Tous (A Demo for All), the main opposition campaign group —
whose
name is a reference to the Government’s Bill, Marriage for All — took an
advertisement in Le Monde on Wednesday. In a message to senators, it
said:
“The Marriage for All Bill and the outcome of this moral, social and
political crisis is in your hands. We are counting on your democratic
wisdom.”
The Times.
Fagburn
se demande si Rupert Murdoch, Richard Desmond,
Viscount Rothermere, ou les frères Barclay
serait même outragée?
Bien
sûr que non - les
vieux salauds!
PS Mais aussi, 'Larousse, the authoritative French dictionary, has infuriated Right-wing MPs after it altered its definition of marriage to a union of "two persons" rather than "between man and woman". Sacré bleu.
