Why would anyone pay money to be sent hate mail? Mr Bingo — not his real
name
— an illustrator who has been commissioned by such respectable
organisations
as Oxfam, the BBC and the Food Standards Agency in Scotland, readily
admits
that posting a message on Twitter offering to send an abusive postcard
to
the first person to respond was not a clever idea. In fact, he says, “It
was
stupid — I did it for a joke to amuse myself, and because I was drunk.”
But
when scores of people replied to his tweet within just a few minutes, he
recognised a hitherto unknown demand for vituperative postal messages...
As for his artwork, it ranges from mildly rude (“Dear Gavin, if you were
a
supermarket you’d be a Lidl”) to truly vile missives. Mr Bingo says he doesn’t do requests
and
has certain rules — no homophobia, no racism, no family members (“in
case
they don’t exist”) — although he occasionally bends them if he is sent a
nice e-mail. “I did one about a gay marriage for a couple of guys who
got
married, which was quite over the top but I knew they wouldn’t be
offended.”
The Times.
More Mr Bingo here.
Shoreditch wanker or genius?
It's too close to call.
