It was complete crap spun by Dr Patrick Williams* - the now disgraced and ex head of PrideLondon.
Guess the only gay media that pointed out this wouldn't happen at the time, instead of just reprinting the press release?

* The fact he continually referred him to himself as "Dr" while working for an organisation that had no bearing on him being a doctor was a bit of a giveaway he was a complete charlatan and loopy dickwad.
