Dan Savage: America's Funniest Gay Comedian

RFE/RL: This summer, you helped launch a boycott of Russian vodka to protest the LGBT crackdown. A growing number of bars in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, and Australia are taking part. Some people have criticized the boycott as ineffective, but you’ve defended its success.

Savage: The idea behind a boycott of an iconic product like vodka, a nation’s signature consumer product, is to get people talking, to draw attention to the reason why you called for that boycott. Nobody was talking about what was going on in Russia — what was being done to LGBT people in that country, about these horrifying laws — until we called for this boycott. That is what a boycott is supposed to do. Nobody suggested that boycotting Russian vodka would dethrone President Vladimir Putin, that it would bring Russia to its knees, that it would destroy the Russian economy.

RFE/RL: You’ve compared what’s going on now in Russia to Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Can you elaborate?

Savage: The Nazi terror wasn’t the Holocaust in a day. There was a gradual escalation of scapegoating, anti-Semitism, and political violence. No one is comparing what’s being done to LGBT Russians to what was done to the Jews in 1943 and 1942 and 1944. But it is eerily similar to what was being done to the Jews in Nazi Germany in 1933 and 1934. The initial persecution campaigns, the stigmatization, the codification into law of anti-Semitism and this kind of bigotry. All of those parallels are identical.

Hilarious!
Reverse ferreting ahoy.
"Nobody was talking about what was going on in Russia... until we called for this boycott."
Loving the delusional vanity.
Boy, would you have looked stupid if you launched your boycott without bothering to check if Stoli was made in Latvia!
And why did supporters of the daft vodka boycott claim it was a form of economic sabotage?
Can't tell the difference between a law modelled on the UK's Section 28 and the systematic extermination of  the Jewish population of Europe?
Dan's your man!
In no way is this attempt at equivalence an insult to the six million people who died in the Nazi holocaust!
Saying "This is how Hitler started!" is as dumb and childish and as hysterical and as completely devoid of rational thought as saying people shouldn't be born - cause that's how Hitler started!
It's a gateway birth, yah?
Yes, it's a (US) state-funded propaganda network - just like the evil Russia Today.
It's also why this "interview" is so uncritical and fawning it reads like something from Pravda.
Ironically.
Dan "Say YES To War On Iraq!" Savage - serving American empire since 2003!

Fuck No, Dan Savage! "created to showcase the cissexist, sexist, anti-asexual, anti-bisexual, classist, racist, sizeist, and ableist douchebaggery of Dan Savage, of "It Gets Better" (for privileged queers only) fame."
The Tumblr doesn't make the obvious point - how It Gets Better may have fetishised suicide for gay teens.
Thanks for all the dead gay kids, Dan!

Thanks to How Upsetting for alerting me to this GAY COMEDY GOLD!

  1. Why liken the Russian 'anti-gay' laws to the persecution of Jews by the Nazis when there was persecution of gays too? Maybe because that doesn't run as well because homosexuality was illegal at the time. In fact why bother with the Nazi references at all.?

Clearly it's getting tougher to be gay in Russia. This article by Alec Luhn seems to better researched better than most. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/01/russia-rise-homophobic-violence

Supposed support groups in the West have to ensure they aren't making things worse by appearing to be anti-Russian rather than pro-gay. That could backfire spectacularly and inflame the anti-gay rhetoric.

    1. Could you give me a link to show I've taken this "word from word" from SL?
If I thought Scott Long had said something I agree with, I would have saved time by just quoting him and given a reference - as I often do...

    1. He's clever - that's part of the problem.
At elite schools and colleges they teach you how not to think/question.

    2. I don't know, intelligence - to me - is absolute.
What corrupts intelligent people is various other things: greed, vanity, prejucide, ignorance, etc.
And I think these qualities negate their intelligence.
They're a sure sign of a complete lack of either self-reflection or care for the wider context. That makes them thick, in spite of a hi IQ - ie. their intelligence is directed towards themselves and their own interests, and fuck the consequences beyond self-promotion.
      Thick as pigshit.

    1. If he hasn't considered the full ramifications abroad, in the very country he's claiming to be helping; then how is that helping those people?
Sure, it helps his own self-promotion, but what else.

The comparison to Richard Littlejohn is as bonkers as Savage comparing Russia's treatment of LGBT citizens to a "pogrom".

Either he's ignorant or he doesn't care what he says to escalate the issue in the West - without considering the LGBT activists in Russia.
Neither is the mark of someone who is just doing what he thinks is best, is it?

  5. How do you know he hasnt talked to people in Russia? If Tatchell claimed to be speaking for the gay community would you take that as case closed? There are some voices in favour of a ban and some not. Maybe it was a mistake but better than doing nothing and just attacking from the internet. Depressing. Id stay quiet if I was Tatchell, Fry or Savage and let them suffer. Uncle Toms like you are too quick to attack.
