Journalese: Gotcha!

To put it another way (newspaper euphemisms)

Bon viveur Drunk
Confirmed bachelor He's gay
Flamboyant He's gay
Fun-loving She put herself about a bit
He never married He was gay
Well turned out He's gay

From Romps, Tots and Boffins: The Strange Language Of News by Robert Thompson, published later this month.
These obituarisms are a little out-dated - even the Telegraph hardly ever uses "He never married" anymore, and the new newspaper euphemism for gay is surely the more bold "camp" (or, if it's a serious story, "colourful") - but Fagburn is very much looking forward to this hotly-anticipated bonk [Sic].
Fagburn thinks of this tendency for tabloid journalists to use words and phrases that no-one really uses in real life - eg squaddies, lags, gays etc etc - as a kind of journalistic drag; ie an un/amusingly unconvincing act.

PS Fagburn may compile a list of pukey phrases only the gay media uses; homophobic slur, straight ally, gays etc etc.
