"'I think I am the only person alive who has met the first man in space, the first man on the moon, the first man who flew, and then Albert Einstein,' says Sir Patrick.
"Sir Patrick never had a formal education because he was ill as a child and schooled at home; when it was time to go to Cambridge the war broke out and that was that. Nor has he ever married. His fiancee was killed by a German bomb, and after that he never wanted another woman.
"Sir Patrick was exceptionally close to his mother, who lived with him until her death in 1981..."
Sir Patrick Moore, profiled in The Daily Telegraph to mark the 700th edition of The Sky At Night.
The story may be apocraphyl, but Fagburn was told Mr Moore was once interviewed on the radio and told the sad story about how his beloved fiancee had died in the war.
"And what was her name?"
"I don't remember."

Love him!
ReplyDeleteShame about the fascism.
ReplyDeleteHe's LOOPILY right-wing, isn't he?
ReplyDeleteNo one takes his political opinions that seriously, though.
ReplyDeleteHe's a doddery old mental, but also a 'national treasure' and The Sky At Night is better than most things on TV.
Long may he continue...
I remember him on several chat shows in the 70s and 80s making a great show of leering at young women through his monocle in a way that made the sexual politics of Benny Hill seem subtle and nuanced. He's also a poster boy and campaigner for UKIP, of course.
ReplyDeleteFagburn - has Sir Patrick Moore ever seen Uranus?
ReplyDeleteWhy is this man referred to on this apalling site. Doesn't seem like he was gay.
ReplyDeleteFrom Wikipedia "He later wrote that "homosexuals are mainly responsible for the spreading of AIDS (the Garden of Eden is home of Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve)".
Well if he slagged off queers he can't have been a closeted old gayer then, yes...
DeleteSince he couldn't even remember the name of his "beloved" fiance read into it what you will.
ReplyDeleteNow he has now passed away we can now comment without legal repercussions. And my comment is that, for all his posturing, he was gay, except for many years he probably never indulged.
He was one of a generation that couldn't quite come to terms with reality and created all kinds of covers to disguise what they were really about. I wonder what they'll say about Harry Rodger Web when he passes away? Pretty much what they think about him now I'd imagine.
Agreed.
DeleteHe was a product of his age - which may have contributed to his noxious views elsewhere - quite sad, really.
Sir Patrick Moore was as straight as Sir Jimmy Savile.
ReplyDeleteHe was a homosexual man like Ted Heath from an age when gay men committed suicide when found out. Remember until 1967 it was a criminal offence.
ReplyDeleteIn his later life he had a young man living with him the exact nature of their relationship is unclear.
Now he is dead I wonder if his past will come back and be revealed.
And he was always good to his mum.
DeletePatrick wasn't gay, having three "sons" proves that!
DeleteFarthings in Selsey, was always an open house, and his generosity was legendary: helping Ian, Chris and Adam when in further education.
Allegedly, he once worked as a spy for the British secret services. Which proves he couldn't possibly have been gay!
gaying, racism, gaying, racism, gaying, racism
ReplyDeletethat's all your sort talk about
sad life
