Leigh Bowery: Automatically Sunshine

It would have been Leigh Bowery's 50th birthday on March 26th.
On Friday April 1st, his friend and biographer, Sue Tilley, has organised Sunshine Night Time: a one day tribute to Leigh at the ICA, London.
With a wonderful irony, Leigh was apparently barred for life from The ICA - perhaps because Mr Bowery had a far better claim to be an institute of contemporary art?

• Sue Tilley remembers Leigh Bowery in the Independent.

    Definitely!

Charles Atlas' The Legend of Leigh Bowery was uploaded to youtube a couple of weeks ago here.
    It's pretty pretty pretty good.

  2. There are various feuds between friends and associates of LB - so it's interesting to note who isn't appearing at this.
I think Leigh would have found it hilarious.

  4. I just got an email from the BFI about the Lesbian and Gay Film Festival starting tonight and in the recommendations bit at the bottom there was a piece about the ICA's Leigh Bowery Day with this brief explanation for his life-long ban:

Bowery himself received a life-ban from the ICA for misbehavior at an i-D magazine party so expect a crazy night.

Ha ha, how badly do you have to "misbehave" to be banned for life!?

  5. I'll have to try and find it in the Tilley book.
I've a feeling he may have been dressed as a Nazi.
    Or given himself an enema.
Hopefully both at the same time...

  6. There was a brief bit in that documentary about an incident where he gave himself an enema before a show, turned round on-stage, bent over and sprayed shit all over the front row of the audience.
I wonder if it was that.
    That'll do it.

  7. It's on pages 42-43.

He nicked a case of vodka and handed them out to friends.
Then walked into an upstairs room where a jazz band was playing, got up on stage and started wanked then pissed over the audience...
Tilley points out Bowery was asked to do things at the ICA after this, and did.
