Perhaps the most cliched article a magazine or newspaper could publish in the last decade is titled something like; 'Why Every Girl Needs A Gay Best Friend' - just try Googling "gay best friend" if you want to find a zillion or so examples.
But gay men are nothing if not great multi-taskers - as yet another of those fabulous cliches has it.
And in the last few days, Fagburn has been thrilled to read features on 'Why every should have a gay son' (Daily Mail), a straight man on 'The gay best mate', (The Times), and - perhaps most bizarrely - how every straight girl would prefer it if her boyfriend "admitted to a series of gay affairs in his youth" (The Sunday Times).
Eh?
"You never, ever hear straight males talking about gay experiences," writes Tiffanie Darke. "Ask most straight blokes if they’ve ever even thought about it and they’re likely to spit a mouthful of beer halfway across the pub. Which, I’ve always thought, rather gave them away. Because, when pressed, every boy has a gay story. Whether it’s a hot, hormonal fumbling in the school gym, a Mediterranean taxi driver getting a bit fresh during his gap year, or an unexpected proposition in the club toilets. Don’t tell me they’ve never thought about it, don’t tell me they’ve never wondered."
Ms Darke appears to have been thinking about this rather a lot.
