To celebrate Mikki Nicholson (pictured) winning the National Scrabble Championship while dressed in a matching shocking pink PVC dress and wig - without anyone so much as batting an eyelid - one of Fagburn's favourite hacks, hetero queen Craig Brown, reminds Daily Mail readers that cross-dressing-up is as English as roast beef, rain and rioting.
"In the evening, I went to the nearby village of Firle. An elaborate Guy Fawkes party was underway.
"It kicked off with a vast procession of trusty villagers dressed in high-camp costumes, escorting papier-mache effigies of Cameron and Clegg.
"It continued with three robust village men clad in equally camp priestly robes denouncing Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators. Each of them looked just like Ann Widdecombe on Strictly Come Dancing.
"What a topsy-turvy world it is! It can’t be long before the Cabinet assembles in ballgowns and the England football squad run onto the pitch dressed from top to toe in chiffon. But now you must excuse me: my stilettos are killing me."
• From The Guardian website: 'This article was amended on 1 November 2010. The original referred throughout to Mikki Nicholson as a man. This has been corrected'. "Nicholson said she had been diagnosed by a psychologist as a woman trapped in a man's body. She has not undergone any surgery."

I'd like to know if "PVC" is accepted as a word in Scrabble?
ReplyDeleteI suppose people did metaphorically "bat an eyelid".
ReplyDeleteThe Scrabble competition wouldn't have got quite so much coverage if Mikki had worn a suit, would it?
I don't think PVC is allowed, because it isn't an abbreviation that is commonly used as a word itself, like AWOL or LASER, etc.
ReplyDeleteIt says so on answers.com so it must be true...
Am I alone in thinking Mikki looks like Lady Gaga???
ReplyDeleteWell, given that we are talking about the National Scrabble Champion, I think the question is less "Does Mikki Nicholson look like Lady Gaga?" and more "Does Lady Gaga look like Mikki Nicholson?".
