A sobering story on the business pages of the Independent On Sunday. "Two lawyers who chased people over illegally copied porn films and computer games are to appear before the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal for trying to use their positions of trust to take "unfair advantage of other persons".
"Davenport Lyons partners David Gore and Brian Millar allegedly sent more than 6,000 letters to web users threatening legal action in what critics called a "bounty hunter" operation...
"The watchdog's statement to the tribunal named a German client of the firm which owns the copyright on a gay porn film called Army Fuckers. A letter of claim from Davenport Lyons regarding the film has been seen by The IoS."

This is actually quite a scary story.
ReplyDeleteThey were also writing to whoever paid the internet bill - not who downloaded the content.
'The letters can be embarrassing. "One of my clients was a mum who only discovered her son was gay when she got a letter from Davenport," he said.'
How do they trace it back to people though?

If it was just a torrent then I think it's very hard to get the relevant details. I don't know though.
As far as I can make out they were caught illegally making copies of the "films", so credit cards wouldn't have been used.
ReplyDeleteI think the "who paid the internet bill" bit means they were traced through their internet provider, and they only know who's name is on the bill.
I could be wrong...
