"Right now he is relieved to have a stretch of time at home in London again. "Since I've stopped doing Merlin I've got my social life back," he says, before adding with a twinkle in his eye: "It's nice to be back in the pool, as it were."
"Wilson lives alone and famously refuses to discuss his private life. He quickly shuts down a follow-up question about his "pool" remark with a well-rehearsed: "I'm not seeing anyone special.""

A few years ago I saw a sitcom on the BBC (I think) where there was a joke about Richard Wilson being gay. I was surprised at the time because I had no idea that he was, or at least that there was sufficient speculation that it could become a joke in a sitcom.
ReplyDeleteEven more surprising given he isn't comfortable talking about it in the press.
The way the IoS journalist "deals with it" reads like a magazine profile from the 1970s...
ReplyDeleteI remember he made it into the NME gossip column in the Britpop days. Something about him being booked in the same hotel as Blur, and them all bumping into each other in the bar late one night and how Wilson was completely ENTRANCED by Alex James...
ReplyDeleteHe is a former cover model of Gay Times but you neglect to mention this.
ReplyDeleteHe is a former cover "model" of Gay Times.
ReplyDeleteAny happier?
Yes. You have made my day less Meldrewish. Great blog btw.
ReplyDeleteThey'll have anyone on the cover nowadays...
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Shayne Ward has many interesting things to impart...
ReplyDeleteAlso when Richard Wilson was on the cover of Gay Times in 94/95 I seem to recall he didn't talk about his "private life" in that either - I've a feeling the interview my have been done for another (non-gay) publication and farmed out.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure the hook was Wilson was acting in an Orton play, so talked about Joe etc and not himself
Wilson has been a supporter of gay rights. It should be his choice and his choice alone to come out of the closet.
ReplyDeleteAgreed - the thing is I don't think you could say he's in the closet...
ReplyDeleteElvis wasn't exactly honest and open about his sexuality.
ReplyDeleteWhich bit of it?
ReplyDeleteWas Elvis not fond of the cock, then?
ReplyDeleteI thought there were rumours of him being bisexual?
He was also A Diabetic!
He's just from another generation really
