Cliff Richard: Innocent Until...

"The allegations are completely false. Up until now I have chosen not to dignify the false allegations with a response, as it would just give them more oxygen.
"However, the police attended my apartment in Berkshire today without notice, except it would appear to the press."

Statement.

Something about this story smells funny.

The media-friendly raid on Cliff Richard's house in BERKSHIRE was carried out by officers from the SOUTH YORKSHIRE police force!

Still, after Hillsborough there's no reason to doubt what they say, is there?

PS Expect to see lots more guff like this in the papers; Sir Cliff Richard Profile: Decades of speculation over life of the bachelor boy. Daily Telegraph. Where knowledge and research are replaced by seeing what comes up if you type 'Cliff Richard gay' into Google.

And more nudge-nudge wink-winkery like this in the Mail; Priest who's become Cliff Richard's rock: As he faces biggest crisis of his life, there's one man he can rely on - Father John, who quit Church to be 'Man Friday'.

  2. The official statement read out by the South Yorkshire force named no names. I wonder whether there will be a vigorous investigation into how the media found out about this. Surely, after Levinson, it can't be the case that police officers are still tipping off the papers, can it?

  3. One of my favourite films is called 'Doubt'. It's about a New York Catholic school in the 1950s. Meryl Streep is like the very strict, scary superior nun and Philip Seymour Hoffman is a charismatic priest who is kind to one of the boys (who is gay) and who she suspects may be a paedo. We never find out one way or another (he may just be being kind to the boy because he recognises a kindred spirit, as it were) - the film isn't about that, but rather about how sure we can be about anything; so it's also about spiritual doubt and so on.
Anyway, I'm reminded of this scene in the film, when I read people speculating online about shit like this:
