No, the Royal Mail has not just issued "a new stamp bearing Alan
Turing's likeness" as stated in Pass notes (28 March). The stamp to commemorate his 100th
birthday as part of the Great Britons series features the bombe
decryption device. The equivalent of "please send photo of tractor"? It
would be interesting to find out how many acknowledged homosexuals have
appeared on a stamp.

Letter to The Guardian.
Well, anyone?
Can you recall ever licking the rear of a gay man of note?
Fangyewverymuch - I'm here all week...
Update: A letter in Thursday's Guardian confirmed Freddie Mercury is the only one - and Gandhi is the only non-white person.
Update2: A letter in Friday's Guardian pointed out another non-white person has been depicted on a Royal Mail stamp; Farrokh Bulsara, aka Freddie Mercury.

Wasn't Freddie Mercury on a stamp a few years ago?
ReplyDeleteDon't fink so.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to come up with one "acknowledged homosexual" and am getting nowhere. :(
Well it is one of the closest thus far...Along with Dumbledore.
ReplyDeleteThis is the tractor reference if anyone's baffled.
ReplyDeletePeter [Ustinov] sipped glasses of water to replenish his saliva levels and reminded us of an advert he had spotted in a Soviet agricultural magazine. It read, he said: "Farmer seeks wife. Wife must own tractor. If interested, please send photo of tractor."
There was a Freddie Mercury stamp issue by Royal Mail in 1999. Not sure of any other homosexuals - acknowledged or otherwise. However, you might want to ask its press office?
