Queen's Speech: England's Dreaming

Today’s Queen’s Speech is expected to contain more than a dozen pieces of legislation, ranging from tighter controls on immigration to help for the elderly with their care bills. But the measure that threatens to cause David Cameron the most trouble will not be on Her Majesty’s list at all – because it is already before Parliament. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill was introduced in January, even though it was not mentioned in the last Queen’s Speech. The reason given was that the Government was still consulting, though as we pointed out at the time, this consultation was not about the principle of gay marriage, but how it should be introduced...

Many Conservative activists who have deserted to Ukip cite gay marriage as one of the reasons for doing so. It is emblematic of the preoccupations of the metropolitan elite – and as such has done more to convince voters that the party’s leadership is out of touch with their day-to-day concerns than almost any other issue. Mr Cameron may get his way in the end, but will it have been worth the damage he has inflicted on his own party?

Daily Telegraph leader.

Yup, they're still droning on about this.
It seems to be a preoccupation of the "metropolitan elite" who write for the Telegraph.
Who really gives a flying fruit cake if the Queen's Speech doesn't mention gay marriage?
Those shimmering symbols of anti-elitism, Prince Philip the geriatric Greek and the old German lady in the funny hat, have a vested interest in "legislation ranging from tighter controls on immigration to help for the elderly with their care bills."
Wake me when this Ruritarian nightmare's over.

Update: Daft leader in today's Evening Standard suggesting not mentioning the gay marriage bill in the Queen's Speech means Cameron could be getting cold feet.
It is interesting that it wasn't - maybe it was done to spare Her Majesty's hypothetical "blushes"? - but this will affect its progress through parliament not a jot.

Update2: And, rather predictably, Thursday's Daily Mail also tries to kick up a fuss about nothing...
