I thought it quite clever and subtle. Superficially liberal attitudes get undermined by attitudes to money; indeed, the attitude to money may be just a re-channelling of the original anti-gay attitude, in the way that people who object to gay marriage sometimes claim their only concern is linguistic, is opposition to monkeying about with the meaning of the word "marriage".
