The Guardian: Tell Me More Lies About Iran?

Rather odd thing in The Guardian today.
Well, it's not in The Guardian - it's online.
Except it's not really on Guardian Online either.
There is a new subsite that doesn't appear on the main page.
It is called Tehran Bureau - which is slightly misleading as they are based in Boston - and we are told it is "hosted by The Guardian".
Presumably this is paid-for content, that they are distancing themselves from.
I've contacted them to ask who's behind this and who's paying for it, but no reply thus far.
Anyway on day one we - but of course - get an article about 'Growing Up Gay In Iran'.
Odd that, how come he's still alive?
I keep reading they hang all the gayers in Iran, and that's why we should bomb them.
This must be true cause I read it somewhere and see no need to question anything I read ever.
Be interesting to see where this goes.
Maybe they'll get A Gay Girl In Damascus to write for them?

PS The Guardian's Brian Whitaker writes a very good blog on the Middle East, often writing about sexuality, gays and that. It is here.

  1. They're trying to set up a non-profit organisation:

I can understand those inside Iran needing discretion (no bylines) but if they're based in the U.S. surely there's no reason why they can't disclose that?
I mean, Iran isn't in the habit of assassinating dissidents abroad, is it?

  2. Almost any US-based business can call themselves "not-for-profit", it sounds nice, but it's usually the opposite - a tax dodge.

I wonder what Brian Whitaker thinks of Tehran Bureau.

    1. Sorry, Brian is no longer in The Guardian's employ.
I think he's probably equally baffled, but more than that I can not say...
