Marriage: Stupid Queens

The Twittersphere was literally set ablaze this afternoon after the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill finally became law after being given the Royal Assent.
Gay and straight simpletons tweeted things like "Thanks Queenie!" "LOVE YA LIZ", and "Thanks your majesty for the Royal Assent".
Edwina Currie joined in the almost hysterical over-excitement by tweeting Pink News: “Queen Mum was always supportive of gay rights. ‘lf we didn’t have them as staff, we’d have to go self-service,’ she once said.”
Fagburn's still not quite sure what this has got to do with anything.
And isn't saying someone was "supportive of gay rights" because they had gay servants, as stupid and offensive as saying a plantation owner supported black liberation because he had slaves?
Coincidentally the good ole Queen Mum, like so many royals was unfeasibly right-wing and a notorious racist - but meh, who cares cause she loved the gays so much she let them serve her gin and tonic.
Stonewall's touching contribution...
Update: Patrick Smugtwit celebrates by writing about, err, Patrick Strudwick! Quite astonishing.

  1. Facebook is full of fuckwits acting as if the bill is a gift bestowed upon us by our benign overload Lizzie. Are people honestly this fucking stupid? I despair.

  2. This Anonymous wasn't amongst those people who tweeted things like "Thanks Queenie!" "LOVE YA LIZ", and "Thanks your majesty for the Royal Assent" but, even so, she defends the right of those who want to thank Her Maj without being insulted & called simpletons.

    1. But she hasn't actually done anything deserving of anyone's thanks.

    2. In fact, as Defender of the Faith it's pretty certain that she would be heartily opposed to anything but 'traditional marriage', although she could never express an opinion publicly. The only thanks necessary is that for doing her duty.

  3. She signs a page, that is all. She also signed Section 28 into law for example so let's pretend she's working on some great moral principal here. Liz signs what she's told to sign.

    1. Nice to see such an orgy of gay forelock-tucking, though.
      "God bless you, ma'am!"

  4. "This may be one of the things this queen will be remembered for. Way to go."

Actual comment on Gay Star News!

  5. I'm no monarchist and certainly don't think we should be thanking the Queen for something that should be common sense, and down to free choice, not royal decree...

But, er, this: "isn't saying someone was "supportive of gay rights" because they had gay servants, as stupid and offensive as saying a plantation owner supported black liberation because he had slaves?"

    !!!!!!!!!!

Good understanding of slavery there, then...

    1. I'm afraid I literally have no idea what you're trying to say - could you try again?

      Thanks

  6. Sorry - you're right, I should have been more clear...

Again, I do agree with your sentiment for the most part.

Was just saying that you need to be careful in your sensationalist comparisons.

Slaves being claimed and owned WITHOUT CHOICE by plantation bosses for no other reason than that they were black - and subsequently being subjected to beatings and other forms of abuse as well as being forced to work for NO money - was slightly different from paid members of serving staff in Bucks palace happening to be (according to the QM)gay.

Of course, I don't think either is right, but just a thought.

  7. Well, of course it was different. But an analogy doesn't have to be exact in *all* respects to be capable of illustrating a point.

Suggesting you are on the side of the gays because you employ some and suggesting you are on the side of black people because you own some are essentially similar in that they fail to show understanding of what it is to be on someone's side.

  8. Fagburn, I think I love you for your cynical attitude and clear-headedness and now that gay marriage is legal, as you're a gay guy and I am female we can get wed.

(no, wait, that's not what gay marriage means. Doh!!!)

P.S. Don't get me started on Stephen Fry and his 'hoorah' comment.

  9. Don't be silly... The vast majority of those 'thanking' the Queen were doing so with their tongues firmly in their cheeks.

Their comments were in the most part another exclamation of jovial celebration while mentioning the Queen's constitutional role in the process.

I also thanked Santa - via Twitter - for my Christmas presents this year, but didn't for a second think he ACTUALLY delivered them down a chimney.
