The Times: Crying 'Firemen' In A Crowded Newspaper

The fire service was once considered so homophobic that managers were warned by the Government to change their ways. Now it has been commended by gay rights campaigners for its liberal and progressive attitude towards homosexual staff.

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is the first fire brigade to make it into the top ten of the Stonewall awards for gay-friendly employers. The Ministry of Defence, the Army and the Royal Navy are all in the top 100 this year.

Of course, the news that some firemen are gay may come as a disappointment to women of a certain disposition. One famous study showed that fire-men had almost three times as much success in getting the phone numbers of attractive women, compared with ordinary mortals. According to the French psychologist Nicolas Guéguen, who carried out the study, “with girls, a firefighter is associated with sexual fantasy and high levels of sex appeal”...
