A few days ago I decided I was going to spend this afternoon charity shopping in a random seaside town.
I wouldn't decide where until I'd got to Brighton Station.
Kinda like On The Road, but on a train.
Okay, nothing like On The Road.
But then on Excess Baggage this morning Sandi Toksvig went on a bus trip from Brighton to Eastbourne.
Kismet!
I got a train still - the busride did sound nice, but I'm not sitting on a rackety old Brighton bus for an hour, and they cost a fortune.
Anyway, there's a heck of a lot of charity shops, stock hmmm, pricing fair, staff quite sane.
Highlights: Got off the train and two boys only about 17/18 walk by holding hands, bold as I'll have you. I thought; "Blimey! Eastbourne's changed! How modern. This is going to be like the last days of Rome." Turned out that was the only bit of poovery I saw all afternoon. Found a first edition of Bertrand Russell's Best - one of me favourite books. Later just as it was time to go I found a copy of Cosmos by Carl Sagan which I've been hunting awhile for. Seemed a cute ending to a most pleasant afternoon.
Drawbacks: Had lunch in a caff that didn't do mushrooms (WTF!) and putting a clock in the station might be an idea (FFS!).
Recommended! 7/10.

On listening to Excess Baggage again, I realise I would have saved £1 if I'd gone by bus - AND could have stopped off anywhere I want along the way.
