The decision to shutter the site was not an easy one to make, and it is with great pain that we say goodbye to our loyal readership. This appeared on Queerty's website today after a few days of being off air with "technical difficulties".
Queerty founder, David Hauslaib, "partnered" with 353 Media last year - and apparently they decided to pull the site.
A real shame - Fagburn liked your style.

Queerty was one of about 4 sites that I visit every day (including this one) and have done for well over a year.
ReplyDeleteIt seemed to have been in flux for about 6 months; losing a lot of what made it great and adding (then removing again) new features.
Such a shame.
I don't really like any of the alternatives, like Towleroad for instance. What others are there?
Apparently, this was an email sent out by David Hauslaib yesterday.

It was popular - and very highly regarded.
ReplyDeleteBut on the front page you could see how many people had read each story and I can't recall it being more than a few thouand, was it?
I don't know what happened with 353 Media, but often with gay media the bosses make unreasonable demands about increasing circulation growth - and then start making suggestions/decisions about how to do this that are antithetical to the ideals of many who work for it...

It's odd that all their past content is now gone.
ReplyDeleteYou'd think it would all be archived, but if you google an old story on there and click on it it just leads to that shutting down message.
It all seems so abrupt. It goes down immediately and they say it's technical difficulties and then after a few days it's gone for good.

I've been reading all over about this and the reaction seems to largely be anti-Queerty; mostly it seems because it was "trashy" and "snarky".

Even Japhy Grant, Queerty's former editor, tweeted last night that he was embarrassed to be associated with what it became. :(
I think they're talking out of their bumholes. I thought the stuff about Target and Corbin Fischer, etc was spot-on. Not sure anyone else is doing stuff like that.
Some of their reporting (and grammar/spelling) was atrocious though...

- it was less well-written, less funny, got more stuff wrong, pretty crappy anti-trans things, and dreadful reporting about teen suicides (including some that never happened)...
I looked at a few gay blogs about Queerty's "shutterage" - lots of gloating; almost all with that "Well it was so awful and bitchy and negative..." line - but that's why it was good.
What do you want - some boring fuckwit pretending everything's okay in the wonderful world of gay?
The Queerty site currently has the "That's all folks" message and above it a banner ad; "Debt Problems?"
