The Daily Express only got round yesterday to writing about that YouGov silly 'survey' that had 1 in 2 young people saying they were not 100% heterosexual.

The Express online attracts few readers' comments - possibly because so many of their readers will have no truck with those new-fangled computing machines.

But this one sent them fucking BALLISTIC!

YouGov Sexuality Survey: 'But What Does It Mean...'

Taken as a whole, 72% of the British public place themselves at the completely heterosexual end of the scale, while 4% put themselves at the completely homosexual end and 19% say they are somewhere in between – classed as bisexual in varying degrees by Kinsey. Of the people that do place themselves in this 1-5 area, the majority incline away from homosexuality – 15% are closer to the heterosexual end, 2% directly in the middle and 2% are closer to the homosexual end.

With each generation, people see their sexuality as less fixed in stone. The results for 18-24 year-olds are particularly striking, as 43% place themselves in the non-binary area between 1 and 5 and 52% place themselves at one end or the other. Of these, only 46% say they are completely heterosexual and 6% as completely homosexual.

People of all generations now accept the idea that sexual orientation exists along a continuum rather than a binary choice - overall 60% of heterosexuals support this idea, and 73% of homosexuals. 28% of heterosexuals believe that 'there is no middle ground – you are either heterosexual or you are not'.

But what does it mean to be at 1 on the scale, and what is the difference being here or at 2? According to the research, progressing further away from 'completely heterosexual' (0) towards the midpoint (3, or 'completely bisexual') increases the chance that you have had a sexual experience with a member of the opposite sex. 23% of those at level 1 have had a sexual encounter with a member of the opposite sex, while 52% of people at level 2 have had such an experience.

Clearly, these figures are not measures of active bisexuality - overall, 89% of the population describes themselves as heterosexual - but putting yourself at level 1 allows for the possibility of homosexual feelings and experiences. More than anything, it indicates an increasingly open minded approach to sexuality. In a further set of questions asking if respondents could conceivably be attracted to, have sex with or have a relationship with someone of the same sex (if the right person came along at the right time), level 1s were at least 35% more likely to say they could than level 0s.

Lads: What Are You Like!!?

Analysing the profiles of 3,300 members who describe themselves as 'laddish', YouGov Profiles is able to reveal a portrait of what makes them different to the rest of the population.

The quintessential lad is a young, northern man at the lower end of the income scale. Sports are his defining interest; he prefers dogs by far; and his food tastes are as manly as they come: chips, burgers, bacon sandwiches and fried chicken are the most strongly correlated with British lads.

It’s the attraction to a certain kind of humour, however, that makes the profile ring true. Often accused of passing off offensive jokes as “banter”, the quintessential lad “finds toilet humour quite funny” and describes himself as "funny" and “barmy”. The top scoring negative adjectives used to describe themselves are 'quick-tempered', 'headstrong' and 'confrontational', suggesting that this is a type of person best encountered in a good mood....

The picture wouldn’t be complete without the media, and the statistical profile fits the stereotype with striking accuracy. In print the classic British lad reads the Sun, football magazine FourFourTwo and lads mag Nuts. There could also be some ladettes in the subject group, with gossip magazines Heat and Take a Break scoring highly. In digital, the modern lad follows Rihanna and The Only Way is Essex’s Mark Wright on Twitter, and, of course, his top Facebook page is none other than the Lad Bible...

Gay Marriage Polls: Are They Balls? Agree/Disagree

I return once again, with a heavy heart, to the issue of gay marriage. There is more rather one-eyed polling by the campaign against gay marriage, dutifully reported the Telegraph. The way polling commissioned by the lobby opposed to gay marriage is reported by the newspapers and those commissioning it is almost a masterclass in poor interpretation of polls.
Firstly we have the problems of polls conducting using agree/disagree statements, which risk bias in the direction of the statement asked (which I have written about at length here) and often give contradictory answers if properly balanced with statements in the other direction. For example, in this poll 62% of people agreed with the statement “marriage should continue to be definied as a life-long exclusive commitment between a man and a woman”. The campaign against gay marriage have consistently focused on this question and interpreted this as meaning that 62% of people are opposed to gay marriage. However, the same poll found people agreeing by 44% to 38% that “legalising gay marriage is important because maintaining the distinction between civil partnerships and marriage worsens public attitudes towards gay people”. One could just as easily cherry pick that question from the poll and claim that more people support than oppose gay marriage...

Now we have that hoary old chestnut of a poll showing people want a referendum on gay marriage. As previously discussed, if asked in an opinion poll people want a referendum on almost everything – unsurprisingly, given that questions on referendums basically boil down to “would you like to have a say on this or should it be left to the hated politicians to decide”. It doesn’t mean there is some huge untapped demand for a referendum on that particular issue, people support a referendum on anything you ask about (the one exception I have managed to track down was a MORI poll back in 2001 that found people did not want a referendum on abolishing the monarchy)
Why do I keep coming back to this? I think its mostly the consistently credulous and one-sided reporting of polls on gay marriage in some sections of the press. Readers of some newspapers could be forgiven for thinking that the polling showed that the public were opposed to gay marriage, when any fair minded look at the broad range of polling on the issue would show that the balance of opinion is broadly positive towards it.

Poll: Who's Really Prejudiced?

More middle-class voters regard themselves as leftwing than do working-class voters, and working-class people show less support for overseas aid and immigration than middle-class voters, according to a new YouGov poll, commissioned by Progress, the Labour pressure group.
The findings arguably underline the complex challenge faces in reconnecting with people who were once described as Labour's core supporters...

 

There is little class difference in overall support shown for gay marriage, nationalising the rail companies or putting workers on company boards...

Good to see some more evidence of how the claim that working-class people are somehow uniquely homophobic - and that the issue of gay marriage turns off working-class voters - is nonsensical and without foundation.

They conclude it's unconvincing for the Tory right to say the issue is a "distraction", when a majority of people now support it.

TV Kissing Poll: Lesbians Good! Married People Yuk!

YouGov has just published the findings of a poll they conducted in June about how people feel about seeing fellas kissing and a'cuddling on TV and that.
You may recall this was quite a big story back then, mainly because of a MADE-UP STORY in The Daily Mail about a wholly fictional "Lesbian TV Watershed Kiss Ban", Christian and Syed canoodling in Eastenders, and The Bailey Report into "the Commercialisation and Sexualisation of Childhood".
Wisely YouGov also raised that thorny old question as to whether kissing outside marriage is ever okay.
I know what you're thinking - but how does this break down according to party affiliation?
As you can see below Lib Dems are pretty levelheaded about things.
But Tories would rather french kiss their dog's bumhole than see two blokes spooning on the tellybox.

And finally here it is broken down according to age.
Fagburn is colourblind, so may have got this wrong, but among 18-24s it appears lesbian kisses are the most acceptable, and married kisses are the least acceptable.
The world's turned upside down!

Right, I think this has settled the whole gay and lesbian kissing on TV before the watershed thing once and for all, so let us never speak of it again.
