Quilliam: Queer Bedfellows

The big shock story breaking today has been that the EDL's founder and leader, Tommy Robinson - the racist hooligan properly known as Stephen Lennon - has quit his group the Whiteshits claiming, without a hint of irony, he was concerned it had become "too extreme".
The Guardian said; "His decision was announced in a press release from the counter-extremism thinktank the Quilliam Foundation, which said it had "facilitated" Robinson's departure and that of the EDL co-founder. Kevin Carroll, also from Luton."
Robinson and the Muslim group Quilliam are now said to be working together.
This sounds most odd, but did not surprise some who have been monitoring Qulliam's activities.
They have a history of making some very strange enemies and allies.
This proved prophetic.
The Quilliam Foundation has received millions from the UK Foreign Office and Home Office.
But for doing what?
Islamophobia Watch - which documents stories about those they believe are harming Britain's Muslim community - has run over 70 stories critical of Quilliam.
A wit of Wildean proportions might call them the Quisling Foundation.
Hahaha!
Fagburn wonders what one of today's leading "anti-imperialist" LGBT slash human rights campaigners has to say about this controversial group...

Oops!
Thankfully, Saint Peter has often reminded everyone that he is opposed to Islamophobia - despite numerous silly assertions to the contrary by Islamophobia Watch, and others on the left, that he often helps fuel it.
Tatchell often claims to be a brave lonely voice on the left speaking out against "Islamofascism".
Fomer comrade Ken Livingstone, among others on the left, have seen this as evidence of Tatchell's Islamic Conspiracy Theory.

"Clearly, Tatchell, whom I strongly defended against homophobia when he was selected as the Labour candidate in Bermondsey, has lost his political bearings and constructed a fantasy world in which the main threat we face, worse than the far right, is Islamic fundamentalist hordes.

"It is not surprising that this approach takes him into a de facto alliance with the American neo-cons and Israeli intelligence services who want to present themselves as defending western "civilisation" against more "backward" civilisations in the Middle East and elsewhere. In reality, as with racism in the age of colonialism, this Islamophobic ideology serves to anaesthetise western audiences to the crimes being committed to justify the seizure of lands in occupied Palestine and the invasion of Iraq."

Tatchell's been speaking out today - in a rare press release - about an apparent ban on gay men entering Kuwait, Qatar and other Gulf States.
[Edit: Apparently not quite so - see Scott Long].
Anyone know which of these are also bankrolling Quilliam?

The EDL has made much play of claiming they were pro-gay and one reason they were against extreme Islamism was because it was homophobic.
Will Tatchell and Robinson be sharing a platform about this soon?
Thankfully for Tommy Robinson, Peter Tatchell can always be counted on to "bravely" speak out.
Unfortunately, all too often, without thinking what it may serve, beyond his own ego. **
** It seems no matter which country the New American Empire has declared this week's Global Enemy Number One, Peter is usually ready to do his little bit to help the war effort by further demonising them.
Here's a favourite claim he first made in May 1999 when NATO was bombing the fuck out of Serbia.

In some conquered villages, Serb soldiers rounded up the men and boys, stripped them naked, and forced the boys to fellate their fathers, and the fathers to sodomise their sons.

And did they bounce their babies on their bayonets, too?
Astonishing, Peter, astonishing...

Iain Dale: Another Kind Of Gay Bashing

Leading gay Tory blogger, broadcaster and publisher, Iain Dale, attacks a man for exercising his democratic right to protest outside the Labour party conference on Brighton seafront this morning.
Nice.
ITV1 were filming an interview with Gordon Brown's former spin doctor Damian McBride, whose Labour-bashing book, Power Trip, the ever-so Conservative Mrs Dale is publishing.
Only adds further evidence to Fagburn's theory that gay Tories tend to be violent nutters.
Iain has given his version of his events on his blog.
He thinks it's all rather amusing that he attacked an elderly peace protester.
The poor frightened doggy was unavailable for comment.

Update: And in other news...
Oops!
Regular viewers may recall Fagburn was arrested in April for shouting "Fuck off, you fat Nazi!" at someone on an EDL march on Brighton seafront.
Let's see what action the police take against Mr Dale.
As Iain's quite big on getting tough on law and order how about temporarily bringing back public flogging?

Update: Another video with commentary; Multi-millionaire Iain Dale Beats Up Impoverished Old Man.

On Thursday Sussex Police said they were letting this right-wing hooligan off with a caution.
If you've ever been arrested for peacefully protesting, why not let them and the media know what you think about this

EDL: Some Gay Men Are Racists Shock!

Mostly male, shaven-headed and white, they can be found in almost any of Britain’s urban centres – a jostling crowd beneath a thicket of placards and Crosses of St. George.

Whether a dozen people standing in the drizzle in a provincial town, or a baying crowd of thousands flooding through a city centre, the chants and the message are the same: they are the English Defence League and they want Muslims out of the UK.

Occasionally, though, unexpected flags can be seen amongst the ranks of red crosses. Some have a rainbow imposed in the corner, some are Union Jacks with the blue replaced with pink, and it is even possible to spot an occasional Gay Pride flag, emblazoned with the legend, ‘DEFEND FREEDOM: UNITE AGAINST ISLAMIC MENACE’.

The far-right in the UK is made up solely of uneducated, white, heterosexual, working-class men. Or so many people seem to think. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual and Queer movement preaches tolerance and inclusion, while the English Defence League is a reactionary, Islamophobic organisation which relies on flag-burning, death threats and violence to communicate its message.

At best the existence of an LGBT division of the EDL seems a bizarre publicity stunt, at worst an underhand attempt to provide legitimacy to a fundamentally racist, homophobic and intolerant organisation.

Left Foot Forward. bigging up a bit of a 'man bites dog' story.
Like gay men are the only social group in history not to be completely free of prejudice.

"Tommy English describes himself as the leader and most active member of a division “about 30 strong”, largely based in London..."
Good job you're writing about this mass movement then, Matthew Broomfield.

"Anti-Fascism": On Badgers, The BNP & Benny Hill

Good to see that this story from International Business Times - that name again, International Business Times - summed up for so many people on Twitter how we should remember those protests against the BNP in London earlier.
And how handy that these young lady badgers are so fruity - they'll probably even be in the Mail and the Telegraph tomorrow.
"Now this IS England! RT" etc etc.
If only the Battle of Cable Street or the entire Spanish Civil War could have been visually summed up so easily - and so saucily.
Now, obviously, this actually happened and the "Far-right extremists [were] chased through London by women dressed as badgers" - presumably while many straight men played the Benny Hill theme tune in their imagination.
But in a world of smartphones, Twitter, and Instagram, there must be loads of people with photos of this crazy political chase taking place, yes?
So please send them in.

PS Call me an over-sceptic, maybe it did happen, but after a Twitterstorm like this I'd just like one bit of proof.
Thanks.

EDL: Supporting Our Lads

Thanks to JC (And Huw, below). x
[Edit: Some Twitter twits managed to turn this into how EDL held a "meeting" - or even regularly hold meetings - at Halfway 2 Heaven].

Update: And after a hard day's Nazi-ing what better way to unwind than getting shirtless with the lads, and sieg heiling at the Cenotaph?

Daily Mail: Faking It

It's a favourite trick/tactic for those with obnoxious right-wing views to try to portray others with obnoxious right-wing views as the real and really nasty extremists.
Witness how the Mail have hyped up this story.
Nigel Farage has had his photo taken shaken hands with an UKIP local election candidate who "liked" an EDL page on Facebook.
Gosh. Whodathunkit?
And a Ukip candidate in the local elections has posted some homophobic comments online.*
Golly gosh!
If you want to damn Ukip, why flip your wig over comments made by one of their almost insignificant and mostly unelectable 1,700 local election candidates - they're so desperate for these they'd let a horse stand - when you only have to point out the party's declared policies?
And if you want to see some pro-EDL or pro-Ukip and anti-gay comments posted online, why not just check the readers' comments sections on Mail Online?

* This sort of story is much-loved by the more politically wanky and dubious sections of the gay media, of course.
"Waah! A bad man called me a nasty name!"
Here's the post by Ukip candidate John Sullivan on sports and homosexuality that many seem to be excited by (Click to enlarge etc), though most just think it's ridiculous and laughable.
If people are getting angry about this daft old bugger (sic) - as some gaybores are on Twitter, inevitably - then I fear for the politic of this country.

Pink News: Send 'Em Back!

If this “gang” want a bunch of EDL thugs turning up harrassing their parents and beating the crap out of them they’re going the right way about it. Muslim area? Not in the UK. They can jog on back home if they think that ANY part of the UK is a Muslim area. Get  them out of the country to some primitive, Islamic state such as Saudi Arabia or Iran. This is a country of supposed tolerance and this intolerance is unacceptable and needs to be stamped out. I wish these morons would go back to whatever hell hole they came from. They do not believe in Western civilized values and are intolerant of anyone who does not believe as they do. Thugs need to be put in jail and sent back to the desert. These anti gay groups who carry out hate crimes, need to be deported back to their own country. This is no place for anti gay attacks and if they cant respect progressive values and human rights then they should go home! Deport the filth at once. I’m afraid we are going to get more of this sort of behaviour from religious nutters what with the influx of more muslim extremists and catholics from Eastern Europe. I don’t want to sound like a UKIP troll but I am now fully convinved that masses of people who come from countries in which breaking 7th century laws (or advocating for their change) makes you and your life worthless (and often lands you in very hot water) is not the best idea if you want to keep Britain a liberal, secular place. This was happening in east london 10 years ago when I lived there. I moved out of east london because of muslims. Re the EDL, you have it wrong. They are not “thugs.” They have their own LGBT division.
https://www.facebook.com/EDL.LGBT.Division You should all join and help them protect you and everyone else.

Pink News Readers' Comments - posted after a news story about a video posted on YouTube which appears to show a group of young men in east London harassing a man for looking gay "in a Muslim area".
It looks like it's real; two men have now been arrested in connection with this and another video.
Some Muslims are homophobic, and some agressively so - I understand there are also some white Christians in this country who are also aggressively homophobic.
Some are stupid hate-filled bigots, but, as you can see from the above, so are some gay men.
And young men of all faiths and none, particularly when they're in groups, often act like bullying macho arseholes.
What's just as depressing is that the above comments read like they could have come from a BNP, EDL or Ukip message board - and that it's literally being used as part of an EDL recruitment campaign (I think some even worse ones have been deleted *).
Readers' comments aren't a reliable or representative guide to a website's readership or their beliefs - and whether on the Guardian or Daily Mail sites they tend to attract a disproportionate amount of scary nutters - but Pink News might want to think about if how it reports stories about Islam, Muslims and Arab and/or Muslim countries attracts people like this.

* Comments are moderated and may be deleted after complaints about abuse - PN.

Brighton's Top Gay: Shame!

From The Argus - via Twitter.

Update - it's all kicking off in Brighton: 'Casuals United, the football hooligan wing of the EDL, made complete tits of themselves in Brighton today (2nd). In response to their humiliation at March for England the fash thought it would be a good idea to come back in even smaller numbers to have a go at the "rabid hordes of commie UAF gays" that passes for the population of Brighton...' EDL: I'm Against Fascism

The freedom of speech and the right of assembly means you let even these Nazi cunts march.
I hope they all fucking die - ideally drowning in a pool of gay Asian spunk - but freedom is indivisible.
So let them march.
The rest is paste.
Good day.

Peter Tatchell: A Few Questions

'Dear Pride London,

East London LGBT Pride – Saturday 1 October 2011

Earlier this year stickers were plastered around East London declaring it a ‘Gay Free Zone’, warning that Allah’s punishment for homosexuality is severe.

[About seven were, but anyway. You should see the graffiti in (non-Muslim) toilets...]

Previously, there had been a series of horrific homophobic attacks outside the local George and Dragon gay pub.

[So why wasn't this reported to the police at the time - or reported in the gay media? Everyone knows there's an EDL racist involved with the George & Dragon]

In one assault, a 21 year old gay man, Oliver Hemsley, was battered over the head with a glass bottle and stabbed seven times, leaving him permanently paralysed and disabled: http://www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-9183.html/

[There is no evidence it was a homophobic attack - if your source is Pink News, we are fucked]

These gay-bashing attacks coincide with a dramatic decline in the number of gay venues in East London and some LGBT people moving out of the area because they feel it is no longer safe to live there.

[Evidence, please. If anything there's been a dramatic rise in gay venues in East London. Hello Hoxton!]

The response of the LGBT community to this homophobia has been feeble. There has been no visible protest and no public affirmation that East London is not, and will never be, a gay-free zone.

{Maybe cause this is all nonsense on a stick]

Many LGBT people want to protest against homophobia in East London. They feel frustrated, angry and let down that no effective protest has taken place. They want a non-racist, unifying event that does not demonise particular communities, but which challenges homophobia and all hatred. I share their feelings.

[Woope-do!]

The suggestion that LGBT people have to tolerate homophobia for the sake of preserving good community relations and not upsetting certain communities, is totally unacceptable. It is a shabby capitulation to prejudice and a shameful betrayal of the generations of LGBT people who have fought for our equality and human rights.

Every victimised community has a moral right – and a civic duty – to fight back against their bigoted oppressors.

[Fine]

People who oppose an LGBT Pride march in East London would never dare tell the Black, Asian or Jewish communities that they should not protest against discrimination and violence. Why are LGBT people expected to forego their right to protest while other victimised communities are not?

[You tell me]

I therefore urge you to organise an East London LGBT Pride march and rally, working in cooperation with local LGBT groups.

[Keep an open mind or else!]

Given the mostly unchallenged homophobia and the declaration that the area is a gay-free zone, we have to protest and show that East London is not a gay-free zone. This requires LGBT visibility and the reclaiming of East London as safe and queer-friendly.

Pride London is a suitably respected and neutral body to host the event, with the necessary experience and resources.

[BZZT! - Not neutral, at least one of them's a racist]

East London Pride does not have to be big or complicated - just a simple march, with some music and a few speeches afterwards.

[By you?]

All you need to do is agree the date, time, assembly area, route and finishing point – and organise a small stage and sound system for the post-march rally.

If you agree in principle by early September, the event can be organised and publicised to take place a month later.

My suggestion for East London LGBT Pride is:

Date: Saturday 1 October 1pm for 1.30pm start

Start point: Commercial Street E1 (by Aldgate East tube)

Route: Whitechapel Road, Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green Road, Shoreditch High Street, Hackney Road, Austin Street.

End point: The churchyard or roadway opposite the gay pub, The George and Dragon, in Austin Street E2. A road closure could be agreed with the police. A small stage and sound system could be erected on the back of flat-top lorry, for speeches and music until 6pm.

I suggest that the East London Pride theme is: "Unite against all hate" or “East London United” or "Gays & Muslims united against hate".

We want to the event to be inclusive and unifying. Black, Asian, Muslim and Jewish organisations should be invited to participate and to provide speakers for the post-march rally.

This rally should explicitly oppose all prejudice and hate, including racism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, misogyny, transphobia and the victimisation of Muslim people.

[Joke?]

We should specifically advise that the EDL and BNP are not welcome and should not attend. If they turn up, we should liaise with the police to remove them. We want nothing to do with their politics of bigotry and division.

[Like this isn't a magnet for racists].

Moreover, no racist, nationalist or far right symbols should be permitted. For example: no Union Jacks or St George's flags.

[See photo above]

Please give me your feedback.

Best wishes,

Peter Tatchell
Director
Peter Tatchell Foundation

[Peter, I know you have good intentions, but this is mainly junk]

Stickergate: Some Elementary Comments

Someone has put a few crappy anti-gay stickers up in east London.
It's hardly the Reichstag fire, is it?
So what does this story feed into that's made it flare up?
It has exposed a faultline that reminds me of the trial of OJ Simpson - many made up their mind who did this the second they heard.
It's also brought a lot of gay racists out the woodwork/closet/dungheap.
If someone keeps mentioning that people are "brown-skinned", it's fairly safe to assume they have a problem with brown-skinned people.
Looking at messageboards it's clear that gay racists would be thrilled if this could be blamed on a Muslim.
And if "no-one's talking about Muslim homophobia", why do I keep reading articles about it - from the usual reactionary suspects?
Has even one article about gay Islamophobia been published in the wake of Stickergate?
At the time of typing we do not know who put the stickers up.
One thing we do now know as a result of Stickergate is that the English Defence League tried to exploit it as a way of picking up support from gay men.
If they weren't behind it the EDL would have welcomed it.
To stir up or celebrate division between oppressed groups is the morality and tactics of Charles Manson.
I wish I could end on an upbeat Pollyanna/Pangloss note, but I can't think of anything good that's come out of all this.

Gay Free Zone Stickers: Bigots Against Bigotry

British Transport Police have released this CCTV image of a man they want to speak to in connection with the "Gay free zone" stickers that appeared in east London earlier this year.
Detective Constable Elaine Sexton said; “These stickers are offensive and we are keen to identify the man in the images as we believe he has information which may assist the investigation.”
No-one has been arrested.
No-one has been charged.
No-one has been found guilty.
But good to see the gay racist lynch mob is already on the warpath.
Makes you proud to be British.
And gay.

East End Gay Pride: Hate Against Hope/Cancelled Due To EDL Interest

Comment: Why Are Gay People Trying To Ban East End Pride?
"In a sad reminder of the prejudice that Prides face throughout the world, the event has been denounced as confrontational, with the organisers facing a flurry of baseless and deeply personal abuse..."
Paul Birrell, Pink News, yesterday.

'East End Pride Organiser Resigns After ‘English Defence League Past’ Is Revealed'
"One of the organisers of East London Gay Pride resigned today after it was revealed that he had been involved with the English Defence League.
"Raymond Berry helped found the far-right group and remains involved in groups including Stop the Islamification of Europe, it was claimed..."
Pink News, today...

• For the record Out East did not call for East End Pride to be "banned". In their open letter they wrote they have; "great concerns about this demonstration and we have decided neither to participate in the event nor to call our supporters to be part of it, and we think it important to express the reasons why...
"We call on you and the organisations supporting this event to cancel it with a view to working with the local communities of the East End to ensure active, inclusive responses are made to homophobia, which do not inadvertently contribute to community tensions."
The statement from LGBT Muslim Group Imaan that outed Raymond Berry's EDL connections.

UPDATE: Wednesday March 16th. Organisers have cancelled East End Gay Pride.
In a rather silly statement they blamed "personal vendettas" against them.

UPDATE2: The shamefully thick and lazy Peter Lloyd, Pink Paper news editor (!), does his usual trick of just cut and pasting a press release without getting a second opinion - thus missing the point of the story (the furore started over unproven assumptions the stickers/posters were put up by Islamists).
He even manages to spell "Defence" "Defense"; Mr Lloyd, (American) spellchecks are only useful if you yourself can spell. Jesus fucking wept.

East End Gay Pride: Not An EDL Free Zone

Blogger Latte Labour has been keeping watch on English Defence League support for East End Gay Pride - and how organisers of the event are happy to allow EDL supporters to join their Facebook group.
Oh dear...
We still don't know who is behind the "Gay Free Zone - Fear Allah" posters that have appeared in parts of London this year; Fagburn thinks it could just as easily be some of the gay cunts who support the English Defence League, or some hate-filled homophobic Islamist cunts.
But it's interesting to note how EDLeaguers are getting behind East End Gay Pride.
Time for East End Gay Pride to declare their event an EDL free zone.

• Johann Hari has added a correction after the online version of his article, 'Can We Talk About Muslim Homophobia Now?' "This article originally said Tower Hamlets had the single highest rise in homophobic violence in the UK, when in fact it merely had one of the highest rises over the past decade. Credit to Peter Lilley for emailing to point this out..."
This is a somewhat mendacious non-apology, if you read Lilley's letter again - it's posted in Comments here.
And Hari may have to print a Correction to this Correction: It was PATRICK Lilley who pointed this out.
Facts really aren't Hari's strong point.

Johann Hari: Can We Talk About Racism On The Gay Scene Now?

'Can we talk about Muslim homophobia now?' asks Johann Hari in his column in the latest issue of Attitude.
You can read the article on Hari's website.
As ever with Hari, it's an interesting piece, striving to be measured, but in this case not quite succeeding.
It's hardly a fucking secret that some Muslims are homophobic, is it love?
Can we talk about homophobia among non-Muslims?
Or about Islamophobia among gay men?
I'm a bit tired of gay journalists saying they're breaking some great taboo when they just vomit up tired and stupid cliches.
It also really frightens Fagburn how any mention of Muslims and homophobia makes some really dodgy gay scumbags come crawling out the woodwork.
Entirely coincidentally GMFA have launched a new campaign today - Switched On - to tackle racism on the gay scene.
Good timing, I think.

Update: Right-wing hack Andrew Gilligan blogs on the right-wing Daily Telegraph on Sunday about how he hates those homophobic Muslims.
He seems to be broadly in agreement with much of what Mr Hari said...

Edit: I can not recall hearing about the attack on The George & Dragon in January 2010, nor can I find any mention of it on the internet - can anyone send Fagburn a news report about it? It is known however that someone closely involved with the George & Dragon is a vocal supporter of the English Defence League...

"Gay Free Zone" Posters In London: Is EDL Behind Them?

Being a thoroughly modern kinda guy I was chatting to people on Facebook last night.
A friend had posted about some anti-gay posters that have appeared in Hoxton, near the gay pub The George & Dragon;
"Loads of these posters have been seen around London. Who is behind them?"
There's been a lot of chatter about these "Gay Free Zone" posters this week.
They were first noted by blogger, Trial By Jeory, Extremists declare Tower Hamlets “gay free zone”, on February 2nd. A friend of his had seen some stickers [both posters and stickers have appeared] in Spitalfields, in East London.
On Thursday, The Daily Star picked up the story.
They're not usually known for getting angry about homophobia - but boy do they love any excuse to demonise Muslims.
FURY AS ISLAM FANATICS DECLARE GAY-FREE ZONE
"MUSLIM extremists have declared a “Gay Free Zone” by launching a hate campaign at homosexuals.
"They have plastered an inner-city area with posters warning gays they will be “severely punished” by Allah.
"Angry locals in Tower Hamlets, east London, say the messages have been placed near schools and are aimed at children.
"One resident, who helped take down 20 posters, said: “They are an incitement to violence, an incitement to kill gay people.
“To put them opposite a school is shocking. There were also kids in a playground in the park where I found one. It’s a campaign of hate.”
Hmmm...
On Monday, the great Charlie Brooker devoted his column in The Guardian to a much praised attack on The Daily Star, and its rampant Islamophobia;
'Q: When does a tabloid become crude propaganda? A: When it starts printing it'
"...the Daily Star is either grossly irresponsible in its sloppy representation of the facts, or engaging in overt anti-Muslim propaganda.
"Who can blame a reader who, after reading such a skewed version of events, is gripped with anti- Muslim fervour?
"On the same page was a phone poll: DO YOU AGREE WITH THE EDL POLICIES? 98% of the respondents did. If I read the Star every day, and believed it, I'd join the EDL too."
Do you know my first thought when I heard about the anti-gay stickers? It's what I posted on Facebook last night;
"I think it's probably the English Defence League doing this, in all seriousness."
My friend replied; "Yeah, i agree that this may not be what it first appears. I made that point a few days ago and think it's really important to establish who's behind it. Quite easily a far-right tactic to create tensions."
Several people commented that they had suspected the same thing.
The EDL is often banging on about homophobia and Islam - and appear keen to attract gay supporters; they even claimed in December to have dis-invited Koran-burning Pastor Terry Jones to adddress a rally, in part because of his homophobia.
Of course, there is a strong homophobic current among Islamists.
Last month five Muslim men were arrested in Derby for distributing a leaflet that called for the execution of gay men.
So we shouldn't be surprised if some hate-filled Islamic fuckwits have been plastering east London with these posters.
But equally I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out the EDL were behind it.
Here's how Charlie Brooker concluded his column on Monday;
"I believe this is a wonderful country. All of it. The people are inherently decent and fair-minded. All of them. We should resist crude attempts at division, wherever they come from. Because we deserve better. All of us."

English Defence League: In League With the Devil

The Guardian has claimed at least twice that the in-no-way racist and Islamophobic English Defence League has a "gay section" or a "gay wing".
There isn't.
Someone has started a group on Facebook for LGBT supporters of EDL - which is something quite different, and perhaps should be taken as seriously as the Facebook groups backing 'Jeremy Clarkson for PM'.
Mind you, when do gay critiques of Islam become racist?
