Will Young: Why I Love Magritte
My passion for Magritte has manifested itself subconsciously in a lot of my work. In my videos, I often play characters who seem humorous at first, yet there's something else behind all that. In the video for Friday's Child, I'm swimming in a pool, topless, with ripped abs. But I'm not like Usher, dancing around with babes in a car. I'm learning how to swim. With four-year-olds. And that's subversive.
Magritte was smart on the outside, rebellious on the inside, and that is kind of me. I'm a very well-to-do guy, very well meaning. I don't shake anything up. I'm not rock'n'roll. But I like to think that, if you look at the levels in my work, there's a lot to see...

Max Clifford: Biter Bit
I am going to resist the opportunity to kick Max Clifford now that he is down, having been found guilty of eight charges of indecent assault.
I first met him in 1981 when I became assistant editor of The Sun and my memories of my dealings with him are certainly mixed.
He knew the right buttons to push: "If you don't want it, then I suppose I'll have to go to the News of the World or Sunday Mirror."
When stories didn't work out as planned - a not uncommon occurrence - one could be certain that the calmest person in the media storm would be Max himself. He had a way of extricating himself, and his clients, from tight spots.
When a young man boasted in a typical Sun "exclusive" of his sexual frolics with a then well-known soap star, her lawyers threatened legal action on the grounds that he was gay.
Max, summoned to MacKenzie's office and confronted with the legal threat, exhibited no sign of panic. After a brief conversation with his client, he simply said: "Some days he's gay, some days he's straight. This happened on straight day." I think we settled out of court...

Though you may have to fiddle about as I think that's meant for people outside the UK.
So if anyone has any tips...
It's either that or go to a local Sports Pub and ask to change the channel.

Stephen Fry: Take That Brunei!
Pink News.
That'll teach 'em.
Is there an e-petition, yet?
As Pink News and others reported on Tuesday this hasn't been introduced, that's been delayed.
And there isn't some new 'Stone the gays law', they're revising the entire penal code to match daft Sharia law nonsense, and so are introducing the death penalty for a tranche of acts; including blasphemy, extra-marital relations and adultery.
It's gruesome, but I seriously doubt anyone will be executed for any of these.
Brunei has the death penalty for various crimes, but it comes under the category Amnesty call 'Abolitionist in practice'
ie They haven't actually executed anyone for anything since 1957.
I'm no expert on the country, but it's unlikely this will change.
Several countries have a death penalty for gay sex - we would know if they were regularly enforced, or if some 'gay genocide' was going on anywhere.
When men are executed all evidence available to reliable human rights researchers invariably suggests it was for male rape - or, as in the most famous case, of two Iranian youths who were charged with raping a younger boy.
Of course, anti-gay laws have an impact beyond their actual enforcement, so it's good to protest, but let's not be gayist hysterics over this.

Warhol: Adios Amiga!
A university computer club has rediscovered digital art created by Andy Warhol on an Amiga computer in 1985, including this version of his iconic Campbell's soup cans.
The group from the Carnegie Mellon University Computer Club freed the works from floppy discs that have been held in The Andy Warhol Museum's archives since 1994, but that had been inaccessible due to their obsolete format.
The project came about after artist Cory Arcangel spotted a YouTube video of Warhol painting Blondie singer Debbie Harry at an Amiga launch in 1985. The video inspired him to approach the museum about the fate of the rest of Warhol's digital experiments. Enter the computer club, which is well known for its collection of obsolete hardware and retro software design skills.
Warhol's original work was commissioned by Commodore, the maker of the much-loved Amiga...

Uganda: Pointless Gesture Draws Widespread Praise
In what's been widely hailed as the most patronising and pointless gay 'protest' since the last one, a wealthy American businessman has planted a rainbow flag at the summit of the highest mountain in Uganda, Pink Star News can reveal.
I'll write that again while its full import sinks in; he planted a rainbow flag on top of a mountain in Uganda!
Neal Gottlieb, a US ice cream manufacturer, claimed he was protesting a draconian new anti-gay bill.
Apolitical gay journalists around the world have been left shrieking with glee and shaking with excitement like so many big wobbly pink blancmanges.
Mr Gottlieb was seemingly unaware of the appalling imperialist symbolism of a wealthy white man planting flags on African territory, and declaring; “Your country’s highest point is no longer its soil, its snow or a summit marker, but rather a gay pride flag waving brilliantly."
On the top of MOUNT STANLEY!
Or of how this self-publicity stunt could be counter-productive, and hurt gay Ugandans struggle.
Nor of the existence of homophobic laws in the USA that he could actually hope to affect change.
As no-one could possibly know this silly act had happened, Gottlieb, wrote an open letter to Uganda's president Yoweri Museveni, which he sent out to the gay media in a press release, thoughtfully attaching a photo of himself and a plug for his ice cream company.
Because nothing shows how much you care about the fate of LGBT people in Africa like PR stunts telling people to buy your ice cream.

Julie Bindel: Why I've Always Hated...
It was early evening and I had not yet eaten, so I took a glass of wine and a packet of Haribos into the private screening of I Am Divine: the story of Divine. I touched neither, because early on in the film I felt a little sick. I’m unsure as to whether that queasiness was a result of the mention of dog excrement (more anon) or the scale of misogyny contained within its 90 minutes...
Footage from Divine’s one and only appearance on Top of the Pops (he was banned as a result of complaints about obscenity) in 1984 singing ‘You Think You’re a Man’ reminded me why I always hated drag. Feminists at the time of the TOTP atrocity labelled Divine ‘woman hating’.
So by the time, towards the end of the film, we were treated to footage of Divine in Pink Flamingos eating dog excrement, I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to want dinner that evening. The fact that it was alluded to at the beginning of the film (it being the stuff of cinematic legend) made the rest of the film pretty unpalatable.

Bryan Singer: A Statement
“The allegations against me are outrageous, vicious and completely false. I do not want these fictitious claims to divert ANY attention from ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past.’ This fantastic film is a labor of love and one of the greatest experiences of my career. So, out of respect to all of the extraordinary contributions from the incredibly talented actors and crew involved, I’ve decided not to participate in the upcoming media events for the film. However, I promise when this situation is over, the facts will show this to be the sick twisted shake down it is. I want to thank fans, friends and family for all their amazing and overwhelming support.”

Pet Shop Boys: A Man From The Future
The opening night of the Late Night Proms will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on July 23rd, as part of the BBC Proms series, and will consist of music by Pet Shop Boys performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Dominic Wheeler.
The concert will be in three parts. Firstly Richard Niles' 1991 'Overture to Performance'. Then a guest vocalist and the orchestra will perform new arrangements by the film composer Angelo Badalamenti of some of Neil and Chris's most personal songs.
Finally the orchestra will be joined by Pet Shop Boys and the BBC Singers for the world premiere of a brand-new work by Tennant and Lowe, 'A Man From The Future'. This is an evocation of the life and work of the computer pioneer and code-breaker, Alan Turing and is written for orchestra, choir, electronics and a narrator with a text based on 'Alan Turing: The Enigma' by Andrew Hodges who has collaborated with Neil and Chris. The orchestrations are by Sven Helbig. The narrator is still to be confirmed.
Neil and Chris said: "It is an honour for us to be invited to present some new music at The Proms and to celebrate Alan Turing 60 years after his death." Andrew Hodges said: “It's just been wonderful working with Neil and Chris on this project”.

Chelsea Manning: On Change
Today is an exciting day. A judge in the state of Kansas has officially ordered my name to be changed from “Bradley Edward Manning” to “Chelsea Elizabeth Manning.” I’ve been working for months for this change, and waiting for years.
It’s worth noting that in both mail and in-person, I’ve often been asked, “Why are you changing your name?” The answer couldn’t be simpler: because it’s a far better, richer, and more honest reflection of who I am and always have been –a woman named Chelsea.
But there is another question I’ve been asked nearly as much, “why are you making this request of the Leavenworth district court?” This is a more complicated question, but the short answer is simple: because I have to...
I’m optimistic that things can –and certainly will –change for the better. There are so many people in America today that are willing and open to discuss trans-related issues. Hopefully today’s name change, while so meaningful to me personally, can also raise awareness of the fact that we trans* people exist everywhere in America today, and that we have must jump through hurdles every day just for being who we are. If I’m successful in obtaining access to trans healthcare, it will not only be something I have wanted for a long time myself, but it will also open the door for many people, both inside and outside the military, to request the right to live more open, fulfilled lives...

Advertising: I Saw It In The Adverts
With same-sex marriages legal in the England and Wales as well as certain parts of the US, the issue of how to represent alternative families in marketing campaigns is creeping up the agenda for many big brands.
Brands including Honey Maid and Coca-Cola have already made steps to representing a diverse family, but for Saatchi & Saatchi director of strategy, Richard Huntington, the marketing community still has a long way to go.
Speaking at Mumsnet's Mumstock event in London today, Hunnington said: “The vast majority of the marketing community is petrified of that sort of diversity and it’s a real shame. It’s a battle we’ve been fighting for decades yet our ads still feature white women in kitchens”
“I think it is really upsetting and inappropriate to keep representing a society that doesn’t exist.”

Gay Marriage: A Conservative Value
A majority of Conservative and Ukip supporters are in favour of gay marriage, new polling shows.
A study by Ipsos MORI found that 61 per cent of would-be Tory voters and 54 per cent who intend to vote for the UK Independence Party support same-sex unions.
The poll highlights a dramatic shift in attitudes to homosexuality in general in Britain within a generation, with support specifically for same-sex marriage more than quadrupling in less than 40 years.
Ipsos MORI said it was “very unusual” to see such a large swing in public opinion on a social issue.
Overall almost seven in 10 Britons – 69 per cent – believe that homosexual couples should be able to marry while just over a quarter – 28 per cent – disagree...
A study by Ipsos MORI found that 61 per cent of would-be Tory voters and 54 per cent who intend to vote for the UK Independence Party support same-sex unions.

Shakespeare: Shall I Compare Thee To Someone Else's Research?
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimmed;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to Time thou grow'st.
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Camp: And The Damage Done
In his perceptive [sic] analysis of gay men's attitudes to camp (What Alan Carr taught me about gay men's prejudice, 21 April), Owen Jones suggests that an aversion to it is a form of self-loathing. But for many of us struggling to come out in the 1970s and 80s, it was camp itself which represented self-hatred. Comedians such as John Inman and Larry Grayson personified everything that I did not want to be. They were almost a third sex: grotesque pantomimic creatures, willingly collusive in the mocking laughter of the TV audience. My generation of activists wanted to show people that we weren't all hairdressers or ballet dancers, just ordinary blokes who worked in factories and offices and drove trains and buses...
From an actual letter someone bothered to write to The Guardian.
Who wants to be 'ordinary'?
And all the poshgays be like; 'Oh Owen, you're saying what we're all thinking.'
'I also hate the gays cause the gays hate the gays, yeah, that makes sense.'
PS Pink News readers continue to gaybore for England.

The Independent: The Return Of Section 28
Although the hook here appears to be an NUT vote story, one wonders if the Independent are aware they first reported on about this research by the British Humanist Assocation last August?
And the following day the BHA reported that already; 'a large number of the schools concerned have removed the relevant statements or have committed to reviewing their policies.
'The BHA is aware that the majority of the schools have removed or revised their sex and relationships education policies.'
So you could say it's gone down...
Asylum: Give The Anarchist A Cigarette
BRITISH anarchists are encouraging illegal immigrants to claim they are GAY if they are collared by border officials. *
A Sun investigation found activists in Calais coaching illegals on what lies to tell if they are caught in the UK.
At one meeting, an anarchist ringleader called Joy told a man from Ghana: “If you say ‘I come to England to find work for a better life’ this will be no good — they will deport you.
“Maybe if you say you’re homosexual, then this is a good story to claim asylum — because in Ghana they are going to kill you straight away if you’re homosexual.”
The Sun.
Well done.
Kind hearts like these should be given a medal.
* Why, by the many moons of Jupiter, has The Sun put 'GAY' in caps?

America: Land Of The Free
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A dozen states still have anti-sodomy laws on the books 10 years after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled they are unconstitutional.
One such state is Louisiana, where gay rights groups contend police have used anti-sodomy laws to target gay men. But state lawmakers sided with religious and conservative groups in refusing to repeal the law last week.
Of 14 states that had anti-sodomy laws, only Montana and Virginia have repealed theirs since the Supreme Court ruling, said Sarah Warbelow, legal director for the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay rights organization.
Warbelow says that in addition to Louisiana, anti-sodomy laws remain on the books in Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Utah.
The Supreme Court ruled in Lawrence v. Texas in 2003 that it is unconstitutional to bar consensual sex between adults, calling it a violation of the 14th Amendment.
Last year, police in East Baton Rouge Parish arrested gay men for attempted crimes against nature using the anti-sodomy law in a sting operation that caused a national outcry.

Owen Jones: Homophobia
Our Owen in The Guardian.
There's barely a sentence here that could not be answered with; 'You really have no idea what you're talking about, do you love?'
I could go through them one-by-one, but let's pause for a moment and ponder Mr Jones' premiss that gay men have a problem with camp.
Okay.
And relax...
Or maybe it's you, dear.
He concludes...
It is much harder – but still necessary – to recognise the homophobia that dwells within the ranks of gay men themselves.

Like in this othering article about all those dreadful gays, dolly?
Maybe we're all too busy sexually assaulting each other at chemsex parties to care.
Or maybe all bisexuals are secretly homophobes 'according to recent made-up research'.
The distance between some gay commentators and ordinary gay men is a gaping chasm.
WE IZ OURS OWN WURST ENEMEEZ!!!
