I had never been uncomfortable being gay; once, when seven or eight, I sat in front of the video and rewound the Levi’s laundrette advert practically until the tape broke. (It was in the ad break, if I recall correctly, of a Tina Turner concert my parents had taped, thus combining two of my consuming passions.) I knew not to do this, though, while my parents were around. Nor did I verbalise such attraction at UCS, though it hardly escaped my peers’ notice, who took time from their busy days parting their hair in curtains to tease or taunt me.

I had gone from a school where I could do dance routines to Bananarama with the girls and be an ersatz grown-up with the indulgent dinnerladies to a school solely populated by pre-teenage boys where campery got you nowhere and no one was interested in talking about the Exchange Rate Mechanism or whatever else I had on the brain that day. I picked up these snippets from my parents’ newspaper and the television news, out of context and hardly understood, but I knew they were things that grown-ups were (in theory) occupied with, and I thought that made them my proper province...

“I think what is great is that [being gay is] going to become a non-issue, and it should be in my mind. To me, it’s not a big deal. It’s just like, OK, this my sexuality, and I’m cool with it, and this is who I am and I accept myself and I’m much more than that. I think that’s the exciting thing about where we are heading, where in time to come it’s not going to be as much of an issue. And that’s being helped along by people being open and upfront about it, and challenging the stereotypes too. 

“I like that we’re sort of in a time where people are like, ‘look: I don’t want to be boxed in by a label'. It’s very limiting to choose A or B as what or who you are - I don’t think it works that way. I think the more we live in the in between, the happier people are gonna be."

He has less time for Miley Cyrus’s identification as pansexual - “whatever it is” - but is happy the conversation about sexuality is progressing and hopeful that eventually coming out as gay won’t be a news story.

Ellen Page recently talked about feeling morally obliged to use her platform to improve gay visibility, something she said factored into her decision to come out so publicly. Lambert was the first openly gay singer to reach number one with an album in the US Billboard chart, making his own journey an important LGBT moment. 

“I think when everything first happened in the beginning I didn’t realise that that was going to be a big part of my trajectory. I didn’t know that that was going to be something that I was going to be representing so when it all first started, I was little but like, wait, what? But then the more I started realising that it was bigger than me in that way, that I could hopefully give a young person some courage – which is exciting!”

Syria: A Gay Man In Aleppo?

Air strikes in Syria will not help LGBTI people persecuted by IS and may lead to revenge attacks against them.

That’s the message from LGBTI Syrians themselves after UK Prime Minister David Cameron cited the execution of gay men as one of the reasons Britain should bomb Islamic State targets.

Reports and graphic images have emerged throughout the year of gay Syrians being thrown from buildings by IS and stoned to death by mobs.

But the bombing raids could make things even worse, according to Armen from Aleppo, Syria’s largest city.

He told GSN today: ‘The British intervention will make the local LGBTs more vulnerable. It places them at risk because IS and the other fighters will take revenge on them.’

Ratteb, a gay Syrian now in exile in Beirut, described IS as ‘the cancer of society’ saying it ‘is against every religious group, including Christianity and Islam’.

But he felt the foreign intervention in Syria would not help LGBTIs.

‘Our problem isn’t only with IS but with all the Arab regimes and the legislation in the region that means LGBTIs have no role in society,’ he said.

‘If these big countries like the Britain really want to help our main concern is changing the law [that criminalizes homosexuality] to help us effectively become active parts of the society.’

Jawad, a Syrian LGBTI refugee now living in Helsinki, Finland, questioned whether gay rights were really a concern of the US, UK, France and others in the coalition.

He told us: ‘In any case, Britain isn’t getting involved in the war to protect gays but for its own benefit, just like every country interfering in the war in Iraq and Syria.’

The American-led coalition includes Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, that all criminalize homosexuality, alongside the western allies...

Kenneth Williams: Infamy! Infamy!

Personal letters and diaries belonging to Carry On star Kenneth Williams have been acquired by the British Library.

The collection includes 43 diaries and approximately 2,000 letters spanning the actor's career, from the age of 18 until his death in 1988.

It was gifted to the library by his friend and neighbour Paul Richardson.

The 1950 edition of the diary, as well as a letter from the archive, will be on display in the Library's permanent exhibition space later this month.

It is believed that roughly 85% of the archive is unpublished material never before seen by researchers, offering unique insights into the life of a gay man before the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1968.

Williams' was an assiduous diary keeper for more than 40 years, and was known to tease his contemporaries with the words: 'You'll be in my diary!', but few have had the opportunity to read them.

"In the pages of the diaries, Williams is instantly recognisable as the acerbic and fastidious character well known to several generations but also, more surprisingly, is shown to be a reflective and poignant observer," said curator Kathryn Johnson.

"The diaries and letters also record the actor's experience of the dying days of the repertory theatre system and the growth of modern celebrity culture, something he seemed both to love and loathe," she continued...

This is a Mail tweet from yesterday as they have now magically changed their story to; 'Studio DENIES Leonardo DiCaprio is 'raped twice by a bear in his new film The Revenant'.

The studio behind the new Leonardo DiCaprio film The Revenant has denied claims he is 'raped by a bear' in one of the movie's early scenes.

It had been reported [WHERE???] that DiCaprio's character Hugh Glass is viciously attacked by the animal, who flips him over on to his back and proceeds to molest him.

'He is raped - twice!' claims Drudge Report.

The site also adds that the 'bear flips Leo over and thrusts and thrusts during the explicit mauling.' ...

Fox, the studio behind the film [said] in a statement; 'As anyone who has seen the movie can attest, the bear in the film is a female who attacks Hugh Glass because she feels he might be threatening her cubs.

'There is clearly no rape scene with a bear.' ...

Hollyoaks: Too Gay

Hollyoaks’ executive producer has revealed that he “gets told off all the time” for making the Channel 4 soap “too gay”.

The popular TV series has featured many gay relationships and cast its first transgender character played by a trans actress last month, but Bryan Kirkwood often receives complaints from viewers.

“We get told off all the time for being too gay and having too many gay characters,” he told the Daily Star. “I don’t think you can be too gay, frankly. The idea that people object to two boys kissing is really bizarre to me.”

Recent storylines have included a ‘Hollypride’ festival, Ste Hay contracting HIV after a one-night stand and Grace Black seducing Kim Butterfield to try and save herself from blackmail.

Kirkwood, former EasterEnders boss, does admit that Hollyoaks can sometimes become “preachy”.

“Sometimes it has been like we are hitting the audience over the head with a pamphlet,” he said. “We have to keep that lightness of touch, otherwise it becomes a little too worthy for its own good.”

Earlier this year, Kirkwood concluded that the soap “made mistakes” with its storyline about a Nigerian gay asylum seeker who suffered homophobic violence from immigration officers.

“We disappeared so far up our own arse,” he said.

Morrissey: Bad Sex

Morrissey has won the 23rd annual Literary Review Bad Sex in Fiction Award for List of the Lost (Penguin). The prize was presented by the lawyer, columnist and performer Nancy Dell’Olio.

The award was announced at a lavish ceremony on Tuesday 1 December 2015 at the In & Out (Naval & Military) Club in St James’s Square, London, where the 400 guests raised a toast to the winner. List of the Lost is Morrissey’s debut novel. His memoir, Autobiography, was released by Penguin Classics in 2013. List of the Lost follows four Boston relay runners who are cursed by an old man in the woods. The judges were swayed by an ecstatic scene involving Ezra, one of the athletes, and his plucky girlfriend, Eliza: ‘At this, Eliza and Ezra rolled together into the one giggling snowball of full-figured copulation, screaming and shouting as they playfully bit and pulled at each other in a dangerous and clamorous rollercoaster coil of sexually violent rotation with Eliza’s breasts barrel-rolled across Ezra’s howling mouth and the pained frenzy of his bulbous salutation extenuating his excitement as it whacked and smacked its way into every muscle of Eliza’s body except for the otherwise central zone.

Morrissey rose to fame in the 1980s as the lyricist and frontman of The Smiths, before launching a lauded solo career spanning ten studio albums to date.

Morrissey was unable to attend due to touring commitments and was unavailable for comment. As he explains in List of the Lost: ‘Sex was always there – everywhere photographically, in print, in film, so expansively thought about that almost nothing more could need to be said about it…’

Using never-before-heard audio tapes from three separate press conferences, in 1982, 1983, and 1984, When AIDS Was Funny illustrates how the reporter Lester Kinsolving, a conservative (and not at all gay-friendly) fixture in the White House press corps, was consistently scoffed at when he posed urgent questions about the AIDS epidemic...

What Calonico has compiled, juxtaposing the deeply troubling audio with images of AIDS patients at Seattle’s Bailey-Boushay House in the 1990s, is an infuriating summation of the Reagan administration’s fatal inaction in confronting a generation-defining tragedy...

Elizabeth Taylor: Bel Air Buyers Club

[Kathy] Ireland carries the torch passed on to her by her mentor, the late actress Dame Elizabeth Taylor. Before her death in 2011 at the age of 79, Taylor founded the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation to fund prevention and education and to direct care and services to people living with AIDS. Ireland revealed to ET that Taylor's activism work didn't stop there. According to Ireland, Taylor developed a secret underground network to get experimental HIV drugs to patients similar to the true story in the movie, Dallas Buyers Club.

"Talk about fearless in her home in Bel-Air," Ireland said. "It was a safe house. A lot of the work that she did, it was illegal, but she was saving lives. It was in a time when it was not something to do. Business associates pleaded with her, 'Leave this thing alone.' She received death threats. Friends hung up on her when she asked for help, but something that I love about Elizabeth is her courage."...

My Beautiful Laundrette: Soap Opera

When Hanif Kureishi’s script arrived through my letterbox, I wanted to shoot it right away. I’d made Walter, the film that was screened on the first night of Channel 4, and was all in favour of the fact that it was originally to be made for TV. Who in their right mind was going to go to the cinema to see a film about a gay Pakistani running a launderette? ...

Back then, if you’d asked me what was important about the film, I’d have said economics, since the homosexual element was really quite straightforward. It was the first time jokes about Mrs Thatcher had been made in the cinema and they got huge laughs [Really? In 1985! FB]. The film ended up being a big cinema hit and changed the lives of everyone involved. There was a reunion recently and the wonderful thing was that we were all there. Nobody had died.
