The 40-year-old is short on height but big on working his triceps (visit his Facebook page for selfies taken in vests on morning jogs) and on the podium makes up for a deficit of inches with bounding leaps and thrusting air punches. And if you won’t quite catch Nézet-Séguin bellowing the rodent cartoon hero’s catchphrase “Here I come to save the day”, that has been his mission statement since he arrived at one of America’s great orchestras — one of the so-called “big five” — in 2012...
Whether or not Nézet-Séguin is the first gay conductor of a “big five” band, he is certainly the first one happy to talk about it. “But I’m not accusing anyone else — it’s up to everyone to choose their own road.” He says he is heartened by the changes he has seen in America on gay rights since he was appointed to Philadelphia in 2010 and the gradual extension of gay marriage to more US states. In the city itself, “there has never, ever been a moment where I felt [being gay] was remotely an issue, not for a musician, a donor, a politician or whatever”...
