Maybe one shouldn't spend much time on stuff like this, but (assuming this is a genuine question), I want to say: how can a gay man have as his "best friend" someone who "hates gay people"?
Aren't we operating with a rather degraded notion of "friend" and "best friend" here? Is the phrase being used as a stand-in for something like, "Bloke I know at work who(m) I really, really fancy and I've had a drink with a couple of times and he didn't actually say No when I hinted I might like to go running with him"?
