World Cup 2022 Qatar: Expect Prison

Fagburn doesn't normally follow the sports or football, but is thrilled to hear that Qatar will be hosting the World Cup in 2022.
Let's hope they decriminalise homsexuality before then, eh?
The penalty is up to five years in prison for both men and women.
According to the International Lesbian And Gay Association; "Along with the civil Penal Code also Islamic Sharia law is in force in Qatar, although only applicable to Muslims. The offence of “Zina” makes any sexual act by a married person outside of marriage punishable by death, while sexual acts by non-married persons are punish by flogging – both offences no matter if they were heterosexual or homosexual."
Nice.
Does FIFA not take a country's homophobic laws and human rights record into consideration?

  1. Homosexuality is legal in Russia - hosts to the World Cup in 2018.
But there is a likelihood of gay fans getting beaten up by police or neo-Nazi thugs.

  2. Brian Whitaker from CiF wrote an interesting corrective to hysteria about Qatar -

BW knows about homosexuality and the Middle East - he's written a rather good book about it.
He says punishment for homosexuality is well in the past. He cites two episodes, both in the 90s. These are both from ILGA's website about Qatar - I'm not sure we should take that as a guide to all the anti-gay activity, legal or otherwise, against gay men in the country...
