“This night is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom. You know who you are – we are unity and we are unstoppable.” *
Independent On Sunday.
Fagburn is very pleased for the 'Bearded Lady', as the UK media have all decided to call her, and glad to hear so many people had a great night.
But can we stop the silly pretense that Conchita winning was some great seismic victory for LGBT rights?
And that homophobia is a problem over there, not here?
This wasn't politics, this was panto.
"Altogether now girls and boys, let's all say 'Boo!' to that nasty villain, Mr Putin."
"BOO!!!"
And the bearded Cinderella went to the ball, and we all lived happily ever after...
Do you really think Putin cares who won Eurovision?
* A clear attack on the unelected government of Ukraine, who seized power in a coup in February, and over Eurovision weekend continued killing their Russian-speaking citizens.
Well done for speaking out, Miss Wurst!

Gotta say that Conchita Wurst was obviously getting pretty tired of having to answer constant questions about Russia when she diplomatically and rightfully responded by emphasising that prejudice is not geographical and can happen anywhere (and she should know as there were many Austrians who were not happy having her represent their country), and she also reminded the media that Russia actually gave her points (she came third in the Russian televote but ended up with 5 points as the Russian jury marked her down).
ReplyDeleteI can't say that a Eurovision win for a bearded drag queen means that we've really progressed so far, considering that Kenny Everett and Freddie Mercury were also doing drag with facial hair more than 30 years ago. Plus a bearded drag queen was hardly a shock for supposedly backward and conservative Bulgaria where the most popular male pop star there, Azis, has been doing drag with full beard now for 15 years. Still, good luck for Conchita Wurst as she very much seems like someone with her head screwed on. Now, how long will it be until some of our gay killjoys who rubbished camp celebrities like Alan Carr and Graham Norton lash out at Conchita Wurst for 'perpetuating stereotypes'?
That's excellent - thanks. x
