Congrats to Peter Tatchell on his in--no-way self-congratulatory Peter Tatchell Is Great! fundraiser last night.
Here he is shaking hands with James Wharton, a leading gay Tory, but they're seemingly the only people these days who don't think he's a complete mentalist and a self-publicising joke.
PS Interested to know where the funds raised will be going? Here's the Peter Tatchell Foundation's accounts.
PPS Oops! Seems that Saint Peter has some loopy racist friends.

Ukip: I Know You Are But What Am I?
Gay people tend to have right-wing political views, Ukip’s candidate for next year’s Mayor of London has said.
Peter Whittle, who is himself gay, told lifestyle magazine Winq that “gay rights” should not actually be associated with the political left wing.
“There are a lot of gay people active in politics, a disproportionate amount. I think that’s for sure, I don’t know why… and they’re more on the centre-right than on the left,” he said.
“Fact of the matter is the left have captured the idea that somehow they are the gay rights part of the political spectrum, but, in fact, there are more gay people on the right.” ...
A voting intention poll conducted for the website PinkNews found the Conservatives and Labour neck-and-neck on 29 per cent in March 2015.
Additionally, 20 per cent of people in that poll intended to vote for the Green Party, 19 per cent for the Liberal Democrats, and 2 per cent for Ukip.
The results of that poll appear to contradict Mr Whittle’s perception that gay people are more right-wing – with both the Conservatives and Ukip scoring significantly higher amongst the UK’s general population...
Independent.
It's like extrapolating something about UK voting trends from a Mail Online survey.
And judging by Pink News' message boards - despite what they say - it's rather popular with LGBT Ukip-types (though PN is rather over-obsessed with slagging them off).
Fagburn can't recall ever seeing a survey that doesn't indicate gay men are more left-wing and liberal than the general population.
Mind you, I can't recall a gay survey that didn't look totally shonky and ropey, so I'm not sure what that tells us.
PS Older readers may recall Ukip's 2004 candidate for London Mayor. Oops.
PPS The Winq's hard-hitting (*sarcasm*) interview is by leading 'gay ex-soldier' and Toryboy, James Wharton, and is too grim for words.

they intended to vote Conservative, and this is almost certainly
unrepresentaive as so much of Pink News journalism appeals to right-wing
gay men.

Well sort of, but while only 29% said/clicked that they intended to vote Conservative, this can hardly be said to be representive as so much of the what Pink News publishes clearly appeals to right-wing gay men. It's like extrapolating something about UK voting trends from a Mail Online survey.

Pink News Exclusive: James Warmbottom
Hallo,
I am not very bright and can't write, so join the army and stop going to saunas.
I would say 'and get gaymarried', but that didn't really work out for me.
Oh, and I'm no longer in the army, I just like wearing the uniform.
AttenSHUN!

Civil Partnerships: Til Death Do Us Part
Excellent choice of photo by The Independent.
It shows (former) soldier boy, James Whartonm getting gaymarried, mere months before he ditched his 'husband'.
Calloo callay!
Update: Photo then replaced - as if by magic - with... some cake toppers!

James Wharton: Poster Boy
James Wharton, the poster boy for the Army's changing stance towards homosexuality during 10 years of service as an openly gay man...
Independent On Sunday.
Independent On Sunday.
He's the gay soldier that got gaymarried* - who claims he was rescued by Prince Harry.
And a joyless anti-sex prude to boot.

Gay Soldiers: Yes Sir, I Will
Gay soldiers are great
Cause they could almost be straight
And they protect the US military-industrial state.
And that's why gay soldiers are great.
Serve power.
Don't think.
Then everything will be rinky-dink-dink.
Yes sir!
Down with gay fetishisation of state power and neo-imperialism!
Your sexual fantasies deserve better.
Wank for peace!

Reverse-Ferret Of The Day: James Wharton
“You’ve not heard me say the word ‘ban’ [saunas] at all, ok. I’m not calling for the government to take action on this, I just think as a community we should all look at it and say ‘do we really want this anymore?’ *
“Yeah, regulation would be great wouldn’t it? Why can’t we just highlight that? And I brought this out earlier this week that things like HIV are not going away, that is not going away, and if we are going to be realistic about trying to defeat [HIV], then where there are places where there is increased risk, because people put themselves occasionally in dangerous situations, why don’t we actually look at that and think ‘well how can we sort this out?’
[Asked if he was surprised by the reaction to his article]“Not really, what I would say is there’s a lot of people who agree with me and they’ve been very vocal too, but also a lot of people who agree with me who can’t go on record, some people who are high profile don’t want to put themselves in the debate, [I just received] a little message saying ‘I completely agree with you’…but you know this is what it’s all about, I sparked a discussion here and it made the national newspapers, and we’ve got a debate going, this is exactly what I wanted."
“People think I am this middle class snob who’s not been around the block, believe me I’ve been around the block, I certainly have. And you know I just think maybe we could just clean up the image of these saunas slightly, obviously they are not going to be closed, saunas are not just going to read my column and think ‘oh you know what he’s got a point, let’s all close our businesses’ – that’s never going to happen, but perhaps we could all look at how we could improve them...

James Wharton, current poster boy for the heteronormative state-and-straight-worshipping British gay right, talking to Gaydio radio this morning, quoted in Pink News.

James Wharton: Introducing Our Controversial New Columnist
Hello,
I am spectacularly thick and posh and right-wing and think all gay men should join the army and get gaymarried, and stop their disgusting gayness.
Like having gay sex and that.
In saunas.
Boo!
My motto? Don't be a faggot - join the army!
It's a man's world.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a prude, I just like killing blokes for a living cause I'm totally fucked up about being queer.
But I think gay sex should be banned, if we - the gays - want to be the new normal let's be normal.
ie Just like straight people.
Simples.
Oh hang on, I haven't really thought about any of this.
This may be related to my mind-boggling thickness.
Sorry.
PS And I never made up that story about Prince Harry just to sell some books!
Great column, James! See you next month.

James Wharton: Screw Your New Normal
A former soldier and prominent LGBT rights campaigner has called for the closure of gay saunas claiming they promote homophobia and threaten to undermine gains in equality made over same-sex marriage.
James Wharton, who served alongside Prince Harry in the Household Cavalry, said places that encouraged gay men to meet for sex encouraged potentially risky behaviour and had been linked to a “disproportionate” number of drug fatalities.
Writing in the magazine Winq he said: “Sex saunas need to be history. The time has come to close them down.”
Mr Wharton said that for gay lifestyles to be accepted as “the new normal” the community needed to avoid frequenting such establishments which he called “thorns in our side that mark our community as different for the wrong reasons.”
The Independent, obvs.
James Wharton - a gay soldier who got gaymarried! So that's a double win! - represents everything that shows why the gay movement is now fucked to buggery.
I don't want to join the army.
I don't want to get married.
I rejoice in not being 'normal'.
Your heteronormative petty bourgeois settlement just makes me want to puke.
So screw you sideways - but not in a 'sex sauna' cause they is bad.
And a pox on those like you who get off on telling other people what to do.
We shall be sovereign over our own minds and bodies, if nothing else.
Isn't being a hired killer 'potentially risky behaviour', you unbelievably thick right-wing fuck?
And in no way was your book a load of nonsense!
Oh do fuck off.

Mail On Sunday: Some Day My Prince Will Come
Apologies. This happened when I was taking a mini-break in the Slough of Despond, and it wasn't until I read Street Of Shame in the new Private Eye that I realised the Mail On Sunday had put it on their front page.
Its prominence, the Eye suggests, may have a lot to do with the divine feud between homophobic shitbag Daily Mail editor, Paul Dacre, and "his upstart rival at the Mail On Sunday, Geordie Grieg".
"Knowing Dacre's squeamishness about homosexuality, Geordie led with with the news that Prince Harry had 'bravely rescued' a gay soldier from homophobic colleagues. An accompanying editorial praised Harry for 'affirming a new more enlightened code' - unlike 'certain traditional conservative institutions' that had too often failed 'to guard vulnerable minorities from cruelty insults and bullying'. Traditional institutions such as the Daily Mail? Of course."
This got much coverage in the media worldwide - it's the kind of gay story even right-wing papers can get behind; 'Gay men serving in the military', alongside 'gay men who want to get married', are the twin pillars of acceptable heteronormative "good gays".*
But this is more about our wonderful British royals, and "our brave boys" in Afghanistan etc etc.
Prince Harry is the real hero here - the gay man appears as a damsel in distress.
I don't want to comment on it any further - though it's odd that you can't comment after the Mail On Sunday article; "Sorry we are unable to accept comments for legal reasons".
Oh.
But if you're interested in reading more, it's taken from Out In The Army: My Life As A Gay Soldier by James Wharton, published by Biteback, the right-wing publishing house run by leading gay Tory blogger Iain Dale.
Something of a dream title for them, I guess.
* James Wharton, pictured in uniform and with his boyfriend, was also the cover star of Attitude's gay marriage issue last year. A double whammy.
