Pink News: P For Vendetta

This is just one of  8 (eight) stories that Pink News has run since yesterday expressing OUTRAGE about a Ben Summerskill saying the Lib Dems support for gay marriage was 'cynical and opportunistic'.

A cynic might think someone is slightly obsessed with Mr Summerskill.

And what's the story of the month... some Lib Dems defend the Lib Dems after criticism!

This one above is a particularly goody as former Lib Dem MP Evan Harris claims he was misquoted by Ben Summerskill - though ironically the words 'sad and disappointed' are not actually a quote from Nick Clegg.

I bet Pink News readers are positively GRIPPED by all this!

  1. Of course, Fagburn isn't in any way obsessed with Pink News. Plus I do think it is news that Ben Summerskill attacking the Lib Dems, which unlike the major two parties had pro gay policies before it was fashionable. I hope Mr Summerskill fades into deserved obscurity.

    1. I hope whatever criticisms I make of Pink News are constructive.

Gay Star News however is a complete pile of shit and an utter embarrassment and should close down immediately.

  2. You do seem to be obssessed in a rather petty way with Pink News - as when you recently accused it of failing to check a story when - as it said in the article itself - it was reporting what the police at that time had said.

You are, however, right that Pink News is doing this story to death and it does seem to have a vendetta against Summerskill. Still there is no getting round that Summerskill was opposing gay marriage even when there was broad political and societal support - and then tried to claim credit for it when it succeeded. And this attack on the Lib Dems - part of the pro-gay marriage campaign - is pitiful. Whatever their possible motives, at least they actually supported gay marriage when impeccably motivated Ben was, er, opposing it. They helped make a difference on this while bizarrely the leading gay rights organisation in Britain opposed it. That's the case, even if Tatchell and the usual suspects are united in criticising Summerskill for this. On this occasion, there is a good reason why almost everyone thinks he's been out of order.

    Agreed about Gay Star News.

    1. I write about PN a lot mainly as they are one of two UK gay news sites, with a high volume of stories - and this is a blog about gay men and the media.

  3. That's fine. And they don't always get it right by any means. I just pointed out that sometimes you are very quick to attack them for non-existent faults, as in the example referred to.

Pink News does repeat quite a lot of stuff, and it also does tend to cover some trivial stories with the most tenuous 'gay' angle. On the other hand, as you say, it has a high volume of stories - and even the more liberal/leftish parts of the mainstream media seems to overlook the vast majority of the more important ones.

    1. One of my main complaints about the US and UK gay news media is that so much of their stories are lifted from the straight media - usually without checking if they are true, or without checking them for anti-gay bias, even if they're in The Sun or The Mail...
