Coronation Street: The Ex-Gay Movement

"Funnily enough the response has been overwhelmingly positive, the response. Some of the gay community have not been happy, and I kind of understand why.
"A lot of gay people think perhaps we're giving the message, 'Oh, this is what happens - a gay man just needs the love of a good woman and then it's all fine'. Actually that's absolutely not what we're saying at all.
"If we'd played this story 20 years ago or even 10 years ago, then I'd agree and think, 'I don't think that's appropriate'. But actually we've moved on from that and what we're saying is that sometimes people's sexuality is a little bit confusing!"

Charlie Condou talking to a Canadian TV station about Marcus now being in a relationship with a woman.

How boring would you have to be to be angry about this - it happens.

  1. In the world of real young persons (unlike Master Daley) there will be kids lambasted by their parents on the basis of this plot twist: "Oh, don't be so silly, Jason, gay, you're just being awkward, trying to upset us, is this why you are always hanging around with that Gareth from number 47, anyway, it doesn't last, I mean, look at that Marcus, now just get on with your schoolwork, no, Gareth can NOT come on holiday with us, just learn to ignore him, I always thought there was something funny about him, bloody little poofter..."

  2. I hate this idea that things which happen in the real world shouldn't be shown in drama because of the fact that the parents of gay kids may use it as a stick to beat them with.
It's that frame of mind that thinks only "good" gay characters should be shown and you end up with dreary wet blanket types and unrealistic angels.
The world isn't like that and if parents of gay kids are that thick they'd use the plot of a soap to try and push their kids back in the closet then they'd probably try and push them back in anyway.
We have to get beyond this idea that positive role models and positive storylines are of utmost importance.

  3. I didn't say it was of the *utmost* importance. But it would be quite nice to have some gay characters utterly settled into ordinariness on the telly before playing about with them and suggesting that sexuality is just a matter of passing fancy--I think I hear "choice" in the wings--so that this character can 'turn' straight. They don't seem to do straight characters turning gay.

    1. Dunno about "Corrie" - Been boycotting it since Elsie Tanner left - but many soaps have had straight characters going gay; cue confusion, anguish, torment, DRAMA etc etc
