Please bear with me while I state the obvious, but I think that's all that can be said - yet needs to be said - about this overblown non-story.
First, there is no gay marriage bill to vote against - all that's certain is that a consultation will begin in March.
I seriously doubt Cameron ever had any intention of taking things beyond this consultation stage, even without the threatened "rebellion".
It was just an announcement made at conference to make the cuts-crazy nasty party sound modern and progressive and nice.
Now there'll be some talking, but nothing will be done.
Repeat - we were never going to get a gay marriage bill someone could scupper.
No more needs to be said on this.
However, as there's been so much outraged virtual comment about the claim that 100 Tory MPs would vote against gay marriage... I can't believe that anyone is surprised.
The only surprise is that this figure is so low - and laughably so.
Conservative MPs were split 43/39 on civil partnerships in 2004 - does anyone seriously think that only one-third of Conservative MPs would oppose same-sex marriage?
But this is academic - it's a rebellion threatened against a bill that doesn't exist.
Sure, it exposes a real faultline in the Tory Party and shows that many Conservative MPs are still unreconstructed homophobes, but - again - who didn't know that already?

Ludicrous piece from Huffinton Post - a glib Tory MP says gay marriage will sail through, probably tomorrow...
