There is no official membership but at the heart of the men-only club are about a dozen undergraduate “officers” devoted to “camp behaviour”, “ostentatious decadence” and a code of secrecy
Founded in 1977, the society is named in honour of the 1st Earl of Cornwall Piers Gaveston, the supposed gay lover of Edward II.

I doubt if it was formed as recently as 1977. In Glasgow there is an Indian restaurant called Killermont Polo Club. It affects, or used to affect when I used to dine there, the ambience of an old-fashioned gents' club, with old photos of ruggah teams, etc, on the walls. One ancient, possibly sepia, photo was labelled Piers Gaveston Society. I wondered whether the proprietors knew what they were doing in displaying that.
