Queer Resistance: Know Your Enemy

Queer struggle is class struggle: workers and queers, unite and fight!

After the massive popularity of the pink&black bloc at the march on 26 March 2011, we will be marching alongside hundreds of thousands of others of our class at the March Against Austerity on October 20th. We will be meeting outside the HMS President a short distance along Victoria Embankment from Blackfriars station from 11.30am, and encourage everyone to arrive by 12.30pm...

Great.
And good to hear QR talking about class consciousness.
Please don't let such an inspirational movement be hijacked by bourgeois, god-worshipping, self-serving, attention-seeking, power-loving hypocrites and phonies.
These people - mentioning no names - are the ones we should be fighting against.
Just a thought.

Brighton Pride: Argus Special Report

"Brighton erupted in an explosion of colour yesterday for its annual Gay Pride parade, writes Jennifer Intern.
"The police as usual got into the spirit - allowing the Argus to take photos of them smiling with some of those ever-so amusing drag queens to show everyone what jolly good sports they are.
"In the above photo however, you can't see the police being spectacularly arsey to protesters.
"'Nor can you see them making loads of pointless, stupid drugs arrests all through the weekend.
"As predictably per."

Update Monday: Pink News reprint verbatim and unchallenged official statements from Sussex Police and Pride organisers - not a single word from any of the demonstrators, who'd it'd take two minutes to find and contact via the internet.

Update Monday 2: And predictably so do Gay Star News. See if you can spot any differences between their "story" and the one in Pink News. Well done!

Alan Bennett: Libraries Gave Us Power (Again).

'I have always been happy in libraries, though without ever being entirely at ease there.
'A scene that seems to crop up regularly in plays I have written has a character, often a young man, standing in front of a bookcase feeling baffled.
'He – and occasionally she – is overwhelmed by the amount of stuff that has been written and the ground to be covered.
'All these books. I’ll never catch up,” wails young Joe Orton in the film script of Prick Up Your Ears.
'Orton himself notoriously defaced library books before starting to write books.
'This resentment, which was, I suppose, somewhere mine, had to do with feeling shut out.
'A library, I used to feel, was like a cocktail party with everybody standing with their back to me; I could not find a way in...'

The Mirror.
The third outing - at least - for (a heavily excised version of) Alan's LRB essay on libraries.
Fine by me.
Mr Bennett has been supporting the campaign Save Kensal Rise Library.

Queer Resistance: Whatever Next?

Here's a statement from Queer Resistance - UK Queers and Allies Against The Cuts - about what they've been up to, what they're getting up to, why they're doing it, and how you can join in.
Brava.

Queer Resistance: UK Queers & Allies Against The Cuts

"A collective of queers and allies across the UK coming together to fight the cuts - including lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer folk. We come from all communities, backgrounds and walks of life and we share one common objective.
"These cuts are going to hit the most vulnerable in our society with minorities directly on the front line, including the lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer communities. We are not all in this together as some may say.
"Now is the time to resist these needless cuts and fight for our community, society and values. Get involved now, however you can...."

There are already groups in Manchester, London and Brighton - find out more and get in touch via their Facebook page or email queerresistance@lists.riseup.net
