Russell Tovey: Quality

He told his parents he was gay when he was 18. Then two years later Attitude magazine rather starkly told the rest of us, after Tovey gave a noncommittal answer to their interviewer. Still it took him 10 years to play gay on stage and screen – about the same amount of time it took him to get over being attacked in Essex. Were the two connected, I ask? “Yeah, 100%. I never before felt… ready, or knowing where I wanted my career to go. I never felt in charge of anything. And then it got to a point where I thought: now.”

Anyway, he says, “If you’re gonna go gay, do it on an HBO show. Do you know what I mean? Quality.”


Russell once walked into G-A-Y Bar, the whole place fainted.

“I was so envious of everyone who went to Sylvia Young Theatre School. I wanted to go but my dad flat-out refused. He thought I’d become some tapdancing freak without qualifications. And he was right in a way. I’m glad I didn’t go.

"I feel like I could have been really effeminate, if I hadn’t gone to the school I went to. Where I felt like I had to toughen up. If I’d have been able to relax, prance around, sing in the street, I might be a different person now. I thank my dad for that, for not allowing me to go down that path.”

    He's a proper screamer though, isn't he? Also, he talks a lot about going to a rough school, but I think his parents owned their own company and so couldn't have been short of a few quid. :(

    I mean, this isn't the first time he's gone on ad nauseum in an interview about how terrible camp gay men are and how he's so grateful for being 'straight acting'. He seems to have a real problem about it, but I heard he's a massive screamer irl and you just know she squeals like a mary when being done up the bumbum (and we all know she's a power bottom).
    The problem is, we don't need more butch fags on TV, we need more camp. After all, it's not 'straight acting' gays that people have a problem with, is it? Like pro-marriage-pro-military-pro-normality "I'm a boring cunt who just happens to be gay" gays, 'straight acting' gays just want to normal... and usually, as with Tovey here, they do that by dissing good old fashioned honest and decent flamers who like to fuck around.
    Fuck him.

    He always makes it sound like he grew up in the ghetto.

    I like the way he's adopted a little dog in lieu of a personality, though.
