The families of four gay men poisoned by Stephen Port will sue Scotland Yard because a 'five-year-old child' would have deduced they were murdered before their detectives did.

The Met repeatedly said the similar deaths in Barking over 15 months were all not suspicious before serial killer Port was arrested last year. 

Jack Taylor, 25, Anthony Walgate, 23, Gabriel Kovari, 22, and Daniel Whitworth, 21, were all murdered by Port but initially they were considered self-administered overdoses and not linked.

All were given lethal amounts of so-called 'chemsex' drug GHB - abused while unconscious - and dumped in the street or the local graveyard.

Port even went to prison for lying about about Mr Walgate's death but officers still failed to work out he was a murderer and he was released before killing again. 

Mr Walgate's mother, Sarah Sak, said today: 'A five-year-old child could have put the clues together'.

She said: 'It was homophobia. He had planted GMB on them. The police thought "young gay lad. Oh he's had chemsex. Done".'

'They were like that from the beginning, they just refused to investigate anything, didn't matter what you said to them they kept telling us there was nothing to investigate.'

Stephen Port: Free The Barking One!

A man accused of murdering four men in east London has also been charged with poisoning, rape and sexual assault.

Stephen Port was charged with four counts of murder last year but the new allegations relate to eight living complainants.

The 41-year-old from Barking denied the charges during a pre trial hearing at the Old Bailey.

He allegedly met the four murder victims on the internet between June 2014 and September 2015.

It is alleged he then invited them to his flat on Cooke Street where he is said to have poisoned them with the psychoactive drug GHB.

Mr Port faces 29 charges in total and is set to stand trial on 4 October.

He was originally charged with four counts of murder and four of administering a poison, but at the Old Bailey on Monday prosecutors added six more counts of administering a poison, seven charges of rape and four of sexual assault.

Mr Port now also faces four alternative charges of manslaughter.

These are alleged to have occurred between 2011 and 2015.

An alleged serial killer accused of drugging and murdering four men he met on gay websites has appeared in court via video link.
Stephen Port, 40, appeared from custody at Kingston Crown Court charged with four counts of murder and four counts of administering a poison with intent to endanger life or inflict grievous bodily harm.
He was due to enter pleas but due to the "large amount of outstanding work" the hearing was adjourned until April.
A provisional trial date was fixed for October 4...

A prominent gay rights campaigner has accused Scotland Yard of failing for over a year to connect the deaths of four young gay men who were drugged and murdered before their bodies were dumped in and around a churchyard in east London.

Peter Tatchell said the force was told 10 months ago about concerns within the gay community over a possible serial killer on the loose – but the police did not appear to have formally linked the deaths until a fourth man was found dead in similar circumstances last month.

Tatchell said he was contacted last December by a friend of one of the victims who was “disturbed” that he had not heard back from police despite raising concerns that the deaths may be linked. “To have three young men found dead in public places in mysterious, unexplained circumstances – all within a mile of each other and within the space of three months – should have triggered alarm bells,” Tatchell said...

One notes Peter has claimed this today, not when the story broke on Monday, but after Pink News reported yesterday;

PinkNews can disclose that it was first made aware of allegations of a link between a number of the deaths in December 2014, and reporters carried out preliminary investigations over the next month.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed it was treating the deaths as separate incidents with “nothing suspicious” to link them, and was not looking for anyone else in connection with them. After contacting the police at the time, PinkNews took the decision not to print a story about the claims... 

This story was followed-up and reported in the Standard and elsewhere as; 'Mr Kovari’s former flatmate had reportedly contacted Pink News to alert them to the fact that the former artist had been using the dating app Grindr.'

But well done to the normally publicity-shy Saint Peter for informing The Guardian etc about his central role in this tragedy today.

Tatchell adds; 'It is appalling that the police did not alert the gay community last year that a serial killer could be on the loose.'

One may wonder why it seems that Mr Tatchell - a man who will usually send out a press release to announce his every bowel movement - also did not.

As ever, I'm sure there's a perfectly innocent explanation for this.

The suspected serial killer accused of poisoning gay men he met on dating app Grindr appeared on Celebrity Masterchef, it was revealed today.

Stephen Port, 40, who will appear at the Old Bailey this morning, made meatballs with JLS singer JB Gill and actress Emma Barton, who plays Honey Mitchell in EastEnders.

The murder suspect, seen wearing a blonde toupee and chef's whites, also grins at the camera while working at West Ham Bus Garage last year...

Stephen Port: Background Check

He is believed to have met his victims on dating app Grindr, reports The Sun, a site which boasts it is a place to meet 'curious guys'.

In his spare time he worked as a £100-a-hour gay prostitute, according to an advert on an online escort site.

An American client described Port as ‘a dream come true’ who has a ‘nicely muscled body’ and ‘strawberry blond hair that is very thick’.

He said Port was ‘the ideal companion’ who was ‘bright, interesting, loving’ and was someone who ‘enjoys laughing’.

On his Facebook page Port claims to have been an Oxford University graduate, a former seaman in the Royal Navy and a special needs teacher.

But yesterday his parents said he had worked as a chef in cafes for the past 13 years.

Speaking from the front room of their small semi in Dagenham, East London, Joan and Albert Port said they only discovered their son had been arrested on Sunday night when he called from a police station asking them to take him £40, some books and a magnifying glass so he could read them.

Mrs Port, 74, said: ‘I was shocked. I am still shaking. I don’t think he has done it. He will have got involved and taken the blame for other people.

‘He was like that at school – he didn’t speak up. They thought he was deaf because he didn’t speak up.’

Her 73-year-old husband, a retired council worker, added: ‘We know something has happened but we don’t really know what happened.

‘We still like him – don’t get me wrong. He is too quiet. He has been led astray. He won’t speak up, he won’t argue.

‘He had a girlfriend about two years ago – but it was a case of she liked him more than he liked her.’ ...

There were more stunning revelations the Mail got from doorstepping his parents and some neighbours yesterday.

Speaking from the front room of their small terraced house, asked what her son was like Mrs Port said: 'He is a quiet boy, tall, 6ft 3in, size 14 shoes. He doesn't say a lot. He had different boyfriends - he is gay.'

Mr Port added: 'Don't me get wrong - I'm against it. We thought he would be alright now - he has just started a new job.

'He goes round different shops stocktaking - the pound shop and car show rooms. He was a chef for 13 years at the bus garage in West Ham.'

Mrs Port said her son had lived in his current flat for nine years - which he kept tidy - and they regularly went to visit him.

They said he is in regular touch with his sister Sharon, 43, who lives in Clacton and were aware of an older man who stayed in his flat but insisted they were not in a relationship.

Mr Port said: 'He lived on his own. He's got this older chap who has known for donkey's and he has got to have somewhere to live as well. He pays the bills.' ...

A 40-year-old special needs teacher will appear in court today accused of murdering four young men over 15 months.

Stephen John Port, from Barking, east London, is accused of poisoning his victims, all in their early twenties, between June last year and September this year.

Three of the bodies were found either close to the churchyard of St Margaret's Church in the town or the nearby Abbey Ruins.

Another alleged victim was found on the same street Port lived in, Cooke Street, in Barking.

Scotland Yard said this morning Port has been charged with four counts of murder.

He has also been charged with four counts of administering a poison with intent to endanger life or inflict grievous bodily harm. Port is due to appear in custody at Barkingside Magistrates' Court today.

Port describes himself on Facebook as a special needs teacher at Westminster Kingsway College in King's Cross. It says he attended the University of Oxford between 2000 and 2003...

The second and third alleged victims Gabriel Kovari, 22, and Daniel Whitworth, 21, were found at the same Barking church within one month of each other.

An inquest earlier this year heard both men had taken GHB and methadone.

Mr Whitworth had 'blamed himself for Mr Kovari's death' after they took the drug GHB at an orgy, Walthamstow Coroner's Court heard in June.

A dog walker found Slovakian-born Mr Kovari on August 28 last year while Mr Whitworth, from Kent, was found on September 20.

The coroner was told that Mr Whitworth was found dead holding a note in his left hand, which said: 'I can't go on anymore, I took the life of my friend Gabriel.

'We were just having some fun at a mate's place and I got carried away and gave him another shot of G[HB]. It was an accident, I know I will go to prison if I go to the police.'

The note said the men had sex at the party and added: 'I have taken what G[HB] I had left, with sleeping pills – if it does kill me it's what I deserve. This way I can at least be with Gabriel again.'
