EastEnders: Young Gay Man's Head Transplant Declared A Success

EastEnders are bringing back Danny Dyer's on-screen son Johnny Carter with hunky new actor Ted Reilly playing the role.

Johnny Carter, played by Sam Strike, came out as gay on the soap before leaving to “go travelling” with his boyfriend and made his last appearance in December 2014.

Now Johnny will return back on screen next month, only this time he will be played by Ted.

Ted is a rising star, having appeared in a number of London theatre productions as well as TV dramas including Call The Midwife, Casualty and Grantchester...

PS It's pretty obvious Sam Strike quit the role as he thought the plotlines for the young gay character, post his coming out, were beyond lame.

Sam Strike became an instant hit with EastEnders fans when he arrived as Johnny Carter at Christmas 2013, but his time on Albert Square proved relatively short after the young actor decided to bow out following a one-year stint.

Little has been known about Sam's reasons for leaving until now, but this week he gave Digital Spy a call for an exclusive and refreshingly honest chat about his soap exit and future plans. ...

Johnny made an impact on the fans very quickly thanks to his 'coming out' scene with Mick. Are you proud of the work you did on that?

"Well that's the thing - I'm sure the writers and the people in the office had a lot more to give to Johnny, and it's an ensemble effort so everyone's got to get their bit, but I kind of feel like Johnny peaked quite early with that.

"Don't get me wrong, though - I was totally happy and really lucky to be given that storyline, as it was an opportunity to impress the viewers as soon as I went in. That was a blessing and I really appreciated that. It was a really nice thing to have. Also, they had that storyline written before they'd even cast me. I was really grateful for the fact that they trusted me to pull something like that off before they knew what I could do."

Could be reading too much into this, but is Sam saying the EastEnders scriptwriters went; 'Right, storyline for a gay teen, he hasn't told his family - it's agony. Big emotional coming out scene with dad. Then after he's come out... err?'

Earlier this year, writers were shocked to receive complaints from viewers [Actually just a couple of twats from the Christian Institute] who were uncomfortable with their display of homosexual relationships.

Thankfully, the BBC are refusing to bend to the moaners' will as character Johnny Carter puckers up with a fella he got close to at Gay Pride celebrations.

The Albert Square teen could face a dilemma after falling for a new man who promptly packs up and leaves to heads home to Italy [Eh?].

Viewers will see Danny Dyer's on screen son, played by Sam Strike, meet Gianluca, played by Gabriele Lombardo, in the colourful parade thrown by London's gay community.

Instantly smitten with the hunk, he introduces him to the rest of his family.

The pair share a passionate kiss at the station, before Gianluca returns to France with Johnny claiming that he wants to follow him...
