Michael Alig: Them Were Rotten Days (Honest)

"None of us was using drugs to have fun. It wasn't like, oh, let's do cocaine and go dance! It was more like we need another line of cocaine to never have to face the truth that we were very self-conscious and uncomfortable in our own skins. And the irony is that we were spearheading this youth movement where the tagline was 'love yourself'."

A lengthy interview with Michael Alig in Guardian Weekend draws inevitably towards this mea culpa 'Drugs BOO!' quote by way of a conclusion.

Worth noting how Michael's story is so often framed as a 'the wages of sin are death' parable, as if Ecstasy is but a gateway drug to smashing someone's head in with a hammer and then dismembering their corpse.

It's by their star interviewer, Emma Brockes, who notoriously manufactured a libellous hatchet-job of an interview with Noam Chomsky.

Why she's still working for them is anyone's guess.

Fagburn wonders if Brockes made-up any of Alig's quotes?

PS Michael is GT's new star columnist! He gets two pages, rather than the standard one. But I guess it's hard to argue with a convicted murderer.

Michael Alig: Free At Last (At Last)

Big kiss. x

Update: An open letter from Michael Musto.

You not only killed Angel, you basically murdered nightlife because, as Mayor Giuliani kept looking for ways to crack down on clubs so they became safe for tourists and community boards, you gave him every reason to put further restraints and make going out an exercise in constantly looking back to see who’s watching your every move. In fact, you made it very uncool to go out at all, especially dressed with any flamboyance, because the association was with a hateful, grisly act of violence that was substance-fueled and totally demented. It was years until people were able to dress up and laugh again, and if you find the nightlife still a little too restrained when you reenter it, you mainly have yourself to blame!

And finally, here's an article in Vanity Fair about picking Michael up from prison and his first week of freedom...

Michael Alig: Free At Last?

Club kid founder Michael Alig is to be released from jail on May 5, according to sources in the know. A check of official prison site by Alig friend Victor Corona confirmed the news. Alig, of course, has been serving time for the murder and dismemberment of drug dealer Angel Melendez on March 17,1996. He has been eligible for parole since 2006, but has been denied until now. The release, although not a surprise, has sent waves through a community who knew him and loved him, as well as those who knew him and hated him. He will be staying with a close friend, and has been recruited for creative jobs by many. His transition to the real world will be eased by a support group who, for the most part, have stuck by him for more than a decade and a half. Michael has never used a computer or cellphone but he has remained keenly aware of the world we live in. There is no chance that he will return to clubs as a way of life, but he will paint and write, and as always, try to impact the way we think...

Michael Alig: Almost Free At Last!

Michael Alig was imprisoned in the ‘90s for collaborating on the murder of a clubbie named Angel Melendez. Alig was the outrageous promoter who would have loved the idea of urine-filled chalices, though his kicky debauchery turned to way more unsavory mayhem as all boundaries seemed to drop off like an escort’s BVDs.

Well, double bolt your doors, because an insider tells me that Alig is getting out of Elmire Prison before Thanksgiving [November 28th]. The facility approves this move: Alig’s just waiting for the green light from Albany, and it looks like it’s happening very soon. Once released, Alig will live in the Bronx with an ex-club kid friend of his, with whom he can compare any unused drink tickets. He’s finishing his memoir, Aligula, and plans to have an art show of his paintings. And what does he want to do for an actual living? “What you do,” the insider told me. “Michael wants to be a pop culture writer and commentator.” Oh, shit. I can just imagine what he’ll do to get my job.

Wonderful news!
Fagburn once interviewed Michael live from prison.
A charming, enchanting and very witty man, I thought, as drug-crazed killers go.
At the end I asked if he'd record a message for my answerphone; "Hi, this is Michael Alig. Richard's not here right now, so leave a message... OR I'LL KILL YOU!"
He laughed and said; "That's too sick!", but I managed to talk him round.

PS I'm pretty sure this is Michael's Twitter account - at least James St James swaps tweets with him, though that could be a fake account too...
