Gawker’s history of outing closeted gay public figures may have cost the company $140 million.
In March, former pro wrestler Hulk Hogan was awarded $115 million — with an extra $25.1 million in punitive damages — by a Florida jury in a civil case against Gawker Media. Four years ago, the website published a tape of Hogan engaging in intercourse with Heather Clem, the ex-wife of his former best friend. As Hogan would testify in court, he was not aware the encounter was being recorded. Since the post went live in 2012, it has been viewed 7.5 million times.
Hogan, however, was reportedly not alone in bringing suit against Gawker. According to the New York Times, the case was being privately funded by venture capitalist Peter Thiel [left], who was outed by Valleywag — Gawker’s Silicon Valley-centric blog — in a 2007 post.
Thiel, an early investor in Facebook and the co-founder of PayPal, has since become a vocal critic of Valleywag, which he has called “the Silicon Valley equivalent of Al Qaeda.” Thiel told PEHub in 2009, “I think they should be described as terrorists, not as writers or reporters.” He would come out publicly three years after the original story was published.
Thiel, a libertarian who has supported Ted Cruz and has pledged to back Donald Trump as one of California’s appointed delegates, has long been a vocal advocate for the freedom of the press. Thiel is behind the Committee for Protection of Journalists, which bills itself as “an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to the global defense of press freedom.”
The Advocate.
'A vocal advocate for the freedom of the press.'

Paris Hilton: Stupid Rich Person Says Something Stupid Shock!
'Noted dimwitted bigot and frequent star of recordings she didn't know
she was starring in Paris Hilton has said something stupid again.
Imagine. And it was during New York Fashion Week. Double imagine.
'A cab driver recorded a conversation she and a friend were having about the gay hook-up app Grindr. After he explained the mechanics of it, Paris said:
'This is an example of an idiot saying something idiotic...'
Great piece on Gawker who get it - and on why this stupid rich girl doesn't.
Also pours scorn on her publicist's equally dumb-dumb explanation...
Paris Hilton's comments were to express that it is dangerous for anyone to have unprotected sex that could lead to a life threatening disease. The conversation became heated, after a close gayfriend told her in a cab ride, a story about a gay man who has AIDS and is knowingly having unprotected sex. He also discussed a website that encourages random sex by gay men with strangers. As she was being shown the website her comments were in reference to those people promoting themselves on the site. The cab driver who recorded this, only provided a portion of the conversation. It was not her intent to make any derogatory comments about all gays. Paris Hilton is a huge supporter of the gay community and would never purposefully make any negative statements about anyone's sexual orientation.
I'm sure she does Love The Gays, that doesn't stop her, or excuse her, from being rich and stupid.
Oh Amerikkka, how you need another revolution!

Ewww. Eww. To get fucked? Gay guys are the horniest people in the world. They're disgusting. Dude, most of them probably have AIDS...I would be so scared if I was a gay guy. You'll like, die of AIDS.Radar has the audio.

Michael Bronski: On Bradley Manning
The April issue of Z Magazine contains a short essay by one of Fagburn's most favourite writers, Michael Bronski; 'Sex and Security - Bradley Manning, Sexual Identity, and WikiLeaks' "When the Manning story first broke last June, Gawker ran a column that was pure exploitation, conjuring up fears that Manning's sexuality was the reason for his 'betrayal.' Asserting that Manning might be transsexual (a rumor so odd that no one else has mentioned it), the report claimed that Manning was turned in to the FBI by a man with whom he had had a flirtation ('Was Wikileaker Bradley Manning Betrayed By His Queer Identity?').
"Since that time, stories about Manning have ignored or downplayed his stated sexuality. The LGBT national press has written very little about him, choosing, presumably, not to play off the angle that someone who allegedly hurt national interests could be a gay martyr..."

• Michael Bronski's A Queer History of the United States is published on May 10th by Random House.
• 'Bradley Manning Case: British moral authority 'at risk' Welsh MP says UK must challenge US over treatment of soldier being detained for alleged leak of state secrets to WikiLeaks' - Ann Clwyd MP in The Guardian.
Update: Ann Clwyd's EDM on Bradley's case was discussed in the Commons Monday night - UK citizenship confirmed, representations to be made to the US State Department...
"I loved it - I look forward to reading Fagburn all the time now" - Michael Bronski, February 2011
