Hillary Clinton: Always There

'Gay rights are human rights.' *

This simple statement is the principle underlying Hillary Clinton’s actions on behalf of the LGBT community — past, present, and future. It was the impetus behind another powerful action, announcing her full support for gay marriage, using more of her powerful words:

“LGBT Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones…And they are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship. That includes marriage.” **

Twenty years after Hillary welcomed us as a couple into the White House, Judy and I got married just a few minutes away at the National Mall. When we got home from our reception, we had a letter from Hillary congratulating us on our marriage. I’ll never forget the first few words written on her letter: “at long last.”

Hillary has always stood with me, Judy, and the entire LGBT community. And she always will.

[Bill] Clinton's longtime friend Taylor Branch interviewed the former president several times in the 1990s for an oral history project. One recording in particular, from 1999, is raising eyebrows for its content. Bill Clinton is said to have used offensive phrases such as "the gay agenda," and to have made references to gays "acting out," which when viewed in a contemporary frame could be seen as damaging in terms of LGBT support...

According to Branch, as Hillary Clinton prepared to enter the New York U.S. Senate race, President Clinton worried that her positions on gay rights would hurt the campaign. After stopping the interview to take a call from his wife, the President returned with a candid assessment of how the issue could affect her campaign. Branch says in his recording:

“[Bill] came in and he said, ‘You know I’ve had much more contact in my life with gay people than Hillary has. He said, ‘I think she’s really a little put off by some of this stuff.’ [Bill] said, ‘Generally I support the gay agenda right down the line. He said [signing Don't Ask Don't Tell] was hard for me, and I’m sure there are still a few things that are hard for me to swallow.'"

Branch recounts President Clinton's worries about the upcoming New York Senate race and claims the president told him, "Hillary, emotionally speaking, still finds the issue harder to swallow than I do. And that it could be difficult for her in New York politics, how far she’ll be asked to go.” ...

Srebrenica Massacre: "Gays In The Military To Blame"

With the capture of Ratko Mladic yesterday, I hope people don't forget the real reason the massacre at Srebrenica happened - Teh Gays In Teh Military!!!
General John Sheehan helpfully explained this at a US Senate hearing last March when he argued against lifting the ban on allowing lesbians and gay men to serve openly in the US military.

"The European militaries today are a product of the collapse of the Soviet Union - nations like Belgium, Luxembourg, the Dutch etc. They firmly believed there was no longer a need for an active combat capability in their militaries.
"As a result they declared a peace dividend and made a conscious effort to socialise their miltary. That included the unionisation of their militaries, it included open homosexuality, demonstrated in a series of activities with a focus on peacekeeping operations, because they did not believe the Germans were going to attack again or the Soviets were coming back.
"That led to a force that was ill-equipped to go to war.
"The case in point that I'm referring to is when the Dutch were required to defend Srebrenica against the Serbs.
"The battalion was understrength, poorly led, and the Serbs came into town, handcuffed the soldiers to the telephone poles, marched the Muslims off and executed them.
"That was the largest massacre in Europe since World War Two."
The chair asks Sheehan; "Did the Dutch leaders tell you it was because there were gay soldiers there?"
"Yes. They included that as part of the problem."

Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Obama Speaks

The Advocate interviews President Barack Obama on the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell and gay marriage - his first interview with the gay media.
On same-sex marriage he says his “attitudes are evolving.”
“Like a lot of people, I'm wrestling with this. I've wrestled with the fact that marriage traditionally has had a different connotation. But I also have a lot of very close friends who are married gay or lesbian couples.”
Fagburn was actually quite moved by hearing Obama speaking about this in the White House today - if nothing else he does give good rhetoric.
Can't see why anyone would want to join the US military myself - unless they're going to do a Bradley Manning (allegedly).
But anyway... Fagburn is looking forward to the future when we think how daft it was that we even had these debates.
