My Night With Reg: Is Gay

Of course, 20 years later, it’s fashionable to object to the classification of this or any other piece of theatre as a “gay play”. But for me at least, My Night with Reg IS a gay play. It might not contain any discussion of homosexuality in itself, but its gay characters behave in a way that an otherwise similar group of straight people wouldn’t. That’s not to say it has an appeal that’s limited to gay audiences; on the contrary, it’s a beautifully constructed exploration of friendship, infidelity and the cost of lying, not to mention a gut-wrenchingly moving look at the loneliness of unrequited love...

Matt Cain in The Independent On Sunday on the revival of My Night With Reg, and the still fashionable nonsense that there is no such thing as a gay play - or a gay film, or a gay novel etc.

Or a gay man, presumably?

Update: 'It's usually described as a gay play and it is' Robert Hastie, who directed the Donmar production, BBC News.

It's about a group of gay men talking about their lives - what else could it be? A Duck Play???

  1. Well, the Secret Committee on Language it is OK to Use ruled that we must not say "gay marriage". I would like to get on this committee, but I do not see any opportunities advertised.
