Thought For The Day: Victoria Wood

Victoria Wood believes that she will probably always be single because “I only meet gay men”.

The comedy writer and actress said: “You don’t meet any straight men in the theatre, unless they are married. I would never say never [to love]. I just think it’s unlikely.”

Wood has two children — Grace, 25, and Henry, 21 — and since her divorce from the magician Geoffrey Durham in 2002, she has remained more or less single, although “not through choice particularly”.

The comedian, who once won a poll to find the person people would most like to live next door to, has also admitted that she dreads becoming a national treasure. “I try not to get drawn into the whole ‘national treasure’ aspect that could be looming if one let it. I just try and concentrate on what I want to do,” she said.

“You don’t want to pander to your idea of what people want from you or you end up writing an endless Hovis advert.”

This article appears in the news pages of the print edition. Somehow I do not think that in 50 years time people will be asking each other what they were doing when they first read the revelation that there are gay men working in the theatre.

Victoria Wood's Nice Cup Of Tea starts on BBC1 next Wednesday at 9pm.
Episode two, next Thursday, features Vicky talking about tea with Morrissey, Matt Smith and Graham Norton.
So probably one for The Gays, then.

Update: Preview on Saturday Review, John Carey says Morrissey comes across as "obnoxious and egotistical". I find this very hard to believe...

Victoria Wood: Happily Unmarried

Wood seems genuinely content. Would she consider marrying again?
“I don’t think I’ve met anybody in the last few years who wasn’t gay, married or crackers, so I can’t see it happening. I certainly would never get married. Even as far as having a relationship I never meet anyone who’s normal, unless they’re a nice married person. Most men my age go out with women 20 years younger so I would have to be looking in the 78 to 80 years bracket and I don’t really want to be there.”

Doesn't look like there's going to be a Christmas Special on the BBC this year - but she has written a BBC One screenplay about the classical pianist Joyce Hatto, to be broadcast next year.
Victoria received the Eon Productions Lifetime Achievement Award at the WFTV Awards yesterday.
Whatever that is.
