Nick Cohen: The Appliance Of Science

'I am not qualified to comment on the science...'

You can say that again.

I defy anyone to find one paragraph herein that makes sense (Cash prize £25).

Record-breaking baffling bollocksia from bomb-boy Nick.

Gay people may well be 'genetic aberrations' - we are probably just a freaking freak of nature - so what?

Porn: The Land Of Make Believe

Think a hundred times, however, before you go further and tamper with the consensual behaviour of adults. Everyone who wants wide-ranging censorship prefers vague claims about ill-defined threats rather than precise information. Intelligence services want to ban all revelations about their work to preserve their mystique and hide their crimes. Religious people want to punish all cases of blasphemy to protect their jealous god or gods. Homophobes argue against homosexual equality because it poses some hazy threat to heterosexual marriage.
If the protesters can find a link between the mysterious world of consensual sexual fantasy and crime, they would be right to ban. But, if they charge ahead and legislate without even bothering to explain the connections between image and reality, word and deed, they will give up more than they know.

Nick Cohen, The Observer.

At last some sense from The Guardian/Observer, who've published no end of silly "ban porn" "ban stuff" "ban wanking" "ban everything" articles online of late.
Cohen's a bit like the late Christopher Hitchens, a neo-imperialist apologist who occasionally makes much sense, lucidly.
The piece is called Hate Porn, Sure, But Be Wary Of Banning It.
It's surely a sign of our collective sexual immaturity, that no writer appears honest enough to say he quite likes looking at porn and having a wank, like almost all men do.
Daily.
Welcome to the land of make-believe.

"You're living in a world of make-believe. With flowers and bells and leprechauns, and magic frogs with funny little hats."
Homer Simpson.

Oh, tell me when this madness ends.

PS Article on BBC News on why most "research" on porn and "harm" is junk science. Also listen to the radio programme linked; "Is it possible that what we call 'moral indignation' is just disgust for what doesn't turn us on?"
And here they explain why oft quoted statistics on online porn are made-up. Not that you can say any old rubbish in this "debate" and get away with it or anything...

PPS Always a tough choice, but this week's award for the stupidest anti-porn article has to go to this monumentally hysterical, dumb and dull piece by Hannah Pool in The Independent.
Stop wanking at Tesco!!!

Nick Cohen: Yah Boo Sucks!

Of course, there is so much more in The Observer today than La Burchill's hate-filled bigotry-by-numbers.
Columnist Nick Cohen is wondering out loud; Why This Obsession With What Gay People Do In Bed?
Nick, you're getting paid a lot for this - how about you telling us?

If nothing else, the arguments about homosexual emancipation have taught us that the penis stands tall in the conservative imagination. Like the dark tower of Mordor, it looms over all else: filling the mind and blotting out the light. Those who attempt to pretend otherwise always stumble over their own flat feet...

Good intro, Nick.
But can he keep it up?
Cohen argues;

"Many homophobes, who make a great show of their disgust at "unnatural practices", imitate the old man. In 1965, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein tried to stop the repeal of criminal penalties on homosexuals by bellowing that "one may just as well condone the devil and all his works" as allow gay sex. True to form, Nigel Hamilton, his biographer, revealed that Monty had passionate, if unconsummated, relationships with young men"

An overly simplistic and reductive cliche this may be - but always fun for winding up rabid anti-gayers, nonetheless.
Next he quotes that great hoary old quote from his old chum Christopher Hitchens...

Whenever I hear some bigmouth in Washington or the Christian heartland banging on about the evils of sodomy, I mentally enter his name in my notebook and contentedly set my watch. Sooner, rather than later, he will be discovered down on his weary and well-worn old knees in some dreary motel or latrine.*

Warming to his admittedly half-baked theme, Nick Cohen then strikes a note of caution.

But 'yah boo sucks, you're really gay' is not an adequate response to prejudice, however true it may be in individual cases... hatred flows from many sources.

Who knew!!?
Apart from you, for half this article, Nick?
Well, you've well and truly buggered that straw man.
I doubt he'll ever walk again.
And in conclusion, sir?

I've no doubt it is satisfying for gays and lesbians to say tu quoque but noli me tangere is the more conclusive response.

And that's your actual Latin - offered in The Observer without translation, natch.
What do you mean you don't know what it means?
Bloody pleb!

* Nick shows how totally down he is with The Gays by writing about a "gay massage parlour". Anyone ever heard of one of these? Nope, me neither.

Happy Father's Day: From Coalition 4 Marriage

This charming ad has appeared on a few websites today.
Though it doesn't make it clear, it's a reference to birth certificates in Spain now listing Progenitor A and B instead of mother and father, apparently.
The horror, the horror!
It appears on Guido Fawkes blog with a supportive editorial once again showing that this self-styled "libertarian" has no grasp of libertarianism.

PS The ASA has rejected complaints against Coalition 4 Marriage's last ad. More during the week as the news is embargoed - though the Telegraph have broken it...

PPS And today's gay marriage op-eds include... Nick Cohen in The Observer, A church fit only for bigots and hypocrites, and in the Sunday Telegraph, Will gay marriage bring on The Rapture? (Or something).
