A programme on Radio 4 today, about
the Skye Boat Song, reminded me of how we were taught nothing about gay men at school - even before Section 28.
And what was, was not really anything to do with The Gays really, just a chance for a schoolboy snigger.
So Bonnie Prince Charlie travelled to Skye dressed as a woman and Horatio Nelson said, "Kiss Me, Hardy."
Tee hee hee.
At A-Level we read Henry James and EM Forster - and the teacher one day said, under hushed tones, "EM Forster was a homosexual."
And that was the end of that.
The closest thing to a gay book in the school library was the works of Oscar Wilde.
I hate this country.
